You're so cold but you feel alive

"Say, Tembu?"

The filly looked up from the lush grass, strands dangling from the corners of her mouth as she regarded the King with a distant, thoughtful expression.

Beneath the canopy of budding leaves it was warm, balmy even. Though the wind still carried some bite as dawn approached the days grew steadily warmer at a pace that astounded the young girl. The mornings were heavy with mist but the thick obscuring curtain had already burned off by the time the sun reached its peak. The scent of flowers was heavy upon the breeze, a thick fragrance that made some sneeze and sniffle while others grew inclined to cast leery eyes upon herd mates they had never looked twice at before. Girls her own age were so caught up in that aspect of spring that it was impossible to get an intelligent word from them, but for some reason Erthë was not among them.

"Can you teach me how to fight? As in, how to do it properly..."

Indeed, this girl had other things on her mind. Things that had nothing to do with singing birds, handsome colts or the havoc of hormones wreaked upon a teenage body. Rather, her attention was upon the giant of a man that was as a surrogate father to her while her real one was not around, and her thoughts recalled an incident in the Threshold before the grip of winter had completely broken.

It was the first time her words had been met with violence rather than more eloquence. Not even Rikyn in his boorish, blunt arrogance had raised a hand even in the heat of one of their usual arguments.

Boetius... He had caught her off guard, taken her utterly by surprise. Only luck had spared her from serious injury, and recalling his wordless, immediate resort to violence still set her mind reeling in shock. Erthë had thought herself strong, capable, skilled even when it came to battle, but in one swift whirl and snap the demonic stranger had alerted her to the folly of that assumption.

She was not experienced at all. She had only gotten lucky a couple of times - that's all there was to it.
