Small ears had perked, drinking in the ’choice words’ her trapped prey had spewed when he fell into her pit. These words were new words, they had a bite to them and were unlike any words her parents ever spoke.

She liked them. She’d remember them. And use them later.

Grinning at the thought, she rose her head slightly as the man wedged an elbow out of the hole she had dug. Her grin faded slightly, realizing that he was not going to be stuck for much longer— well, at least her trap had worked! On a victim much larger than she intended! (Johnny’s optimist hadn’t entirely missed his daughter).

Banj?” her brazen voice repeated his name, the expression on her face clearly conveying just how odd she found his name, “I’m Larue and you didn’t—“ but her pert declaration that she hadn’t answered his question about his tail was promptly cut off as his large, sharp toenails suddenly emerged from the depths of her trap and landed squarely on the earth in front of her.

She couldn't stop her loud gulp— those claws were as big as her leg! Turquoise eyes widened in her pink-tinted face as she glanced up into his strangely shade face, “What are you?” There were equal parts awe and trepidation in her voice, though it was clear she was trying (and failing) to hide it beneath nonchalant curiosity.

Her head jerked to the hole as he gestured and asked about it, and her tiny chest puffed up with juvenile pride, “Oh, not long at all! And I did it all by myself!” Her shock at his nails and build was quickly and easily replaced with boastful grins with chameleon-like ease that only children can master.

Her grin spilled over to delighted giggles as he began to re-cover her trickery with branches. And he was bigger, so he could get even larger branches. But wait, those claws could dig it deeper— “Hey, uh— Banj?” in her youthful excitement she grasped for his name, “D’you think you could dig it deeper?” Her bright eyes glittered with excited anticipation.
