The startling sound from the brambles caused the amber stallion to stagger backwards, those kind verdant eyes knitting together at the brow with worry and fear. He leaned on his hocks, ready to either leap away and warn the herd or fight?
Tilney had hardly fought a battle of any kind, great or small in his life. As a colt he had preferred to spend his days in the company of his herds elders as opposed to sharpening his antlers and sparring with his peers.
Tilney had hardly noticed that his apprentice now stood trembling at his hip; the god-awful roars and squeals had stolen every sliver of his frightened, bewildered attention until he caught the gaze of the double-pennoned nurse. "Ultima!" was a horrified roar of his own. The tone in his voice was quite scalding, as if she had just told him she'd killed some poor creature and needed a pair of antlers to hide the body. There was no time to begin a lecture on why she shouldn't be there and until moments ago she would of been perfectly welcome; It's not like any of them anticipated a little hedge pruning to come to this.

The bronze man could only do what he could with the little time he assumed they had and stepped in front of the feather light girl, crown lowered and aimed towards the enemy. He agreed heartily with the shrill call made by his friend and colleague Alysanne - they absolutely must not let this harm the herd, or anything for that matter. What a catastrophy it would be if this spectre were to explode and take the trees and all kinds of flora with it? The edgers left would have no shelter for one thing nor no food.
"Tembovu!" Tilney bellowed over the screeching noises "Should we call an evacuation!? We could have everyone out in only a few minutes at full gallop with directions from the air!"

It was only after he looked at the other faces around him that Tilney began to ask himself, Is this my doing?
It was he who had set the thicket aflame, and he who unleashed this horrid spectral creature upon them. Honour prevented the amber stallion from standing on the sidelines; he would protect his friends in the best way he could!

His first strike was to paw like a bull at a matador, snorting gruffly. He had seen his father do this to chill his opponents to the bone, right before he charged like an angry ram and broke the defendants every rib. Each tine of his fearsome antlers were aimed directly at the heart of the brambles and the squealing phantom as he took three marching steps forwards. Next he spoke in a voice none present had ever heard from him, and likely would not ever again.
"we here have mother moon on our side; we are not afraid!"
