Scales slid across sand, across puddles, across rocks and stones, gliding sinuously, serpentining through pieces of sky, dust, and dunes. A long tongue flashed, darted, relishing in the scent of the unknown, before returning and curling back into its massive jaws. Others were nearby – a tempting predilection. Who was to play predator, who was to play prey?
She took her time, wiling away the pieces of hours, the snippets of moments, coiling around a lone tree before blending back into the colors and hues of the mismatched earth. The large serpent wished she could have the same brilliant quality as the surroundings; become a reflective portion of the grounds, camouflage into the pools of water, strike when everyone was mesmerized by sights and sounds – and no one the wiser when she sunk her fangs into their figures, when she gobbled, consumed, and devoured them whole.
The notion almost made her hiss with glee.
Instead, however, she eyed her newfound…friends. Both equines (a given around these parts – since when did Helovia have to be ruled by things with hooves and horns? Why not scales? Why not claws?), armed tooth and nail with swords, one with wings. Damn, she muttered to herself. He’d easily thwart her. But what about the angelic looking one…?
Temptation and hunger rattled her as she inched forward, slowly, cautiously, nearly silent. The puddles weren’t a deterrent. The grounds didn’t coax her away. Even their daggers couldn’t persuade her to cease and desist. She was starving, she was driven, she was enamored with the notion, with the idea, of having unicorn for lunch.
So she advanced, grew in height as she raised herself off the ground, and tried to wind her way around the mare’s left hind leg as she rampaged by.
