THE STRANDS IN YOUR EYES, THAT COLOUR THEM WONDERFUL
STOP ME - AND STEAL MY BREATH.

It wasn't over, it wasn't over, it couldn't be over, not now, not after all they had been through -

She stopped before she could touch him, though every part of her longed to reach out and brush her muscle against his soaking skin.  Maybe her body could convey what her words could not.  Maybe if he would allow her to just step closer, his fire could cleanse their tarnished love, burn away the rust and dirt and leave them shiny and new.  But she didn't reach out.  She didn't move.  She merely watched him, sadness and regret glimmering in her darkened eyes.  Gaucho's wing stretched forward and her lips parted, the pain in her delicate features suddenly replaced by need.  A single feather reached closer, stroking along her cheek gently and she sighed, tilting her head to lean into his offered embrace -

But then the touch was gone, snatched away as one might steal sweets from a child who had raided the cookie jar.  She was reminded starkly that she was undeserving of such gentleness, of such a tortured display of love.

"Gaucho can't -"  The words were full of hurt and hate but there was something else too, something that stoked the dying flame in her heart.  Even so, she felt as though her heart was slowly being ripped from her chest, as though all of her previous actions were collaborating to crush her as slowly and painfully as possible.  Her features twisted hopelessly as she reached out as though to help him; she stopped herself, drawing her muzzle down and away, dropping her gaze to the sands.  He didn't want her touch.  That was abundantly clear.

The stallion needing to think was something that she had not expected and, surprised, she glanced upward.  She nodded at the request, her throat too tight for words.  What more was there to say, anyway?  All she could do now was await his judgment.  "I won't leave," she whispered to him as he backed away. But it was a hollow promise even to her.

She stayed in the rain long after he had gone, praying for his forgiveness.

And for hers.
