Troubling thoughts conjured into troubled feelings. Injecting their poison, infecting her heart, driving the young one away to search for the mother she could no longer stand separated from. Things didn’t feel… right in the Dragon’s Throat. Nothing really did, with or without the luxury of a herd – it didn’t have a meaning in the end. She escaped Helovia, confused and dazed by her situation, however determined to find that which time and distance drove her further from that temporary resting place. Strange, how she could feel her body rejoice with respite in contrast to the internal twisting of her soul.

When she left she never looked back, not once, thinking she would never return. The thought of finding her people, at least, inspired hopeful dreams and wishes to motivate her forwards. One day at a time, flying one stroke at a time. The pursuit would be long and lengthy, and before she could truly realize, she had no more to take or spend in her pursuit. No amount of energy, any wise words or optimistic chimes of encouragement. Ru’s fire dulled, and with the last leg simmered from the lack of fuel; for she could not sustain herself out there any longer.

Not wanting to relive the hollow setting of the Dragon’s Throat, the pegasi retraced her steps back into Helovia’s open mouth. Passing the familiar sight of the Threshold, taking to the air, moved further on into the unknown. She needed to remind herself she was not safe in these lands. There was no point trying to please anyone, or seeking out help. She was on her own, and she would need to find shelter, food, water… a temporary place, a headquarters from which she could do her own exploring. Normally the thought would be liberating; she could become anything she wanted! She had the whole of Helovia to discover, once more, chewing back the memory of her family – swallowing the painful reality of their disappearance and probable deaths. It would pass, no?

With the sun to her back, she found little comfort in the sky. There was barely a draft, and the season made her skin sweat. It was nice, she was used to the scorching weather, but not immune to its effects. Ru’s mouth inevitably became dry, she smacked her lips and tilted her head down – searching for a source of water upon the earth’s surface.

Familiar lands appeared; a meadow she’d come across in the winter months. Recognizing the azure streams bellow, the youth drove down. Until her wings caught her descent, opening and holding the air underneath them, drifting smoothly for her legs to catch the earth. Slim limbs made their way to the edge of a creek. For now she disregarded the dry grass, and the shrunken rivers. Taking a quick look around, believing she was alone, the dunskin filly dipped her head and drank the cool liquids.

Her eyelids slid down, savoring the coolness and the particular earthy taste of the water.

Ru’s body shivered in delight. A rare however appreciative sense from the surrounding elements.
