The Painted Buck

The trio had spent significantly more time in the thistle meadow since discovering the sweet taste of its plentiful grasses. Since Tallsun had dried up much of their food supplies (even some in the north) it was necessary that they always find more and rely on them for as long as they could. Still, the meadow may have been beautiful and bountiful but it had its downsides. The most obvious of these was that the trees were more scarce, and without them the Clovenheart and his companions were subjected to the full force of the sun. As nocturnal creatures, they were less pleased by the God's heat on their backs, and would have much preferred the cold comfort of the Moon.

Still, the sunshine did afford a certain... well, obviously lightness to the day that consequently affected all of their moods. Lochan had rested much as of late, and so even he was able to move about with a fair bit of energy. Thus, all three wove with ease through the grasses, and complained little of the lack of shadow to blanket them. Ashamin led the trio forth with his lips upturned, and his large ears swiveled to listen for movement about them. One thing that spending time in the thistle meadow did mean was practicing the instincts of prey, for the space was open and the shelter was scarce.

Because of his observant state of mind, Ashamin was not caught off guard by the young mare that flew down from the sky. She landed some ways off, perhaps not noticing the Clovenheart and his cerndyr as she flew over, and seemed to have settled by the same stream that the trio had chosen to follow. Rakt, not wanting to be ignored and not feeling particularly stealthy, let out a lowing call towards the mare before quickening his pace and urging his bonded brothers to move towards her. Given that Lochan and Ashamin saw no reason to not indulge the red cerndyr's rare social proclivity, they picked up their feet and did the same.

"Greetings, stranger!" Ashamin called out to the mare as he drew closer and began to slow. He crossed the stream without hesitation, relishing the cool water as it splashed up his fetlocks. "Would you mind if we kept you company?"
