The Painted Buck


Though Ashamin was somewhat surprised to hear no words in response, he should not have been. The trill that the mare gave was bird like, and in many ways it did not seem out of place coming from her lips. She tucked her wings closer, shook her tail, and he noticed them, took in the excess of feathers covering her body like a protective cloak. Perhaps that was her nature, perhaps she was just shy; both were possibilities he would not question. When the mare said nothing, and gave only a noise that (to him) did not indicated dissatisfaction, Ashamin swallowed his confusion and nodded in respect.

What else was there to do? He turned back to face the stream but did not cross it, instead silently dipping his head to take a drink and relish the cool relief from Tallsun. Lochan accepted the mare's silence, but Rakt only fixed his gaze on her more intently. He might have been offended that now, when he at last was being friendly to an extent, he was met with a silence that he could only interpret as brusque. Vaguely, Ashamin waved his tail behind him and then set it along the red cerndyr's spine, urging him to not bother the mare.

With a huff, Rakt obeyed. Ashamin couldn't help but wonder if she would always stay that way, though, and if her quiet meant that she couldn't speak or didn't wish to. And what about him, was he also to stay silent? It had been some time since he had relished, or really even existed, in quiet. It was awkward for him, a stallion so skilled with words. Despite the water still dripping from his lips and tangling itself in his beard, Ashamin's mouth felt suddenly dry.

"Thank you," was all the painted buck said, rolling the words over more than he might usually. He supposed those words were as good as any to test and see if he'd receive any sort of response.
