He hadn’t spoke to her.
For all her absence, for all her singular escapades, it was clear to the dark colt that she didn’t need his speech or company. And, so, he treated his sister with silence (though the two still slept in their dam’s cave, and thus were in each other’s company). And they wandered in each other’s company.
Though, despite on half of the whole remaining silent, the couple was anything but. Kiada rambled on and on, doggedly ignoring his silence and speaking enough for the both of them. And the colt, growing fouler and fouler of temper, marched onward and forward, wandering almost blindly as he strived to prove his point by silently battling his sister’s babble.
He was more angry. So his silence would hold out.
Or, at least, that was how he saw things. Regardless, his black dipped legs walked and walked; he was glad for the coolness of the Basin as compared to the warmer southern climates during this season’s (‘Tallsun,’ mother had called it) long, hot days. His ears tilted back against his skull, attempting to block out any sound but the miffed rumble of his irked thoughts aimed at his sister. They were two parts to a whole, she was part of his life. And she kept leaving him for others.
And so it was this blinded annoyance that lead the stomping pair into the Haruspex’s cave. Mother had mentioned this place, though she hadn’t been forthcoming with information about it for some reason. He blinked rapidly, adjusting to the dimness of the cave compared to the bright midday light of outside.
And there was a mare with a cerndyr standing in it. He recognized her from the herd meeting—the woman had been appointed as new Haruspex (a stupidly hard word to say, he acknowledged to himself). And she was staring into some kind of hard expanse of flat, thin rock. Except it was reflective, like a calm water’s surface.
His lined face tilted, still resolutely giving Kia the silent treatment as he spoke only to the woman in front of them, “What is that? And why are you staring at it? His voice range loudly and clearly in the cave.
