Traveling seems to breathe life into his weary bones.  Strange seeing as how he came to Helovia as a sanctuary after near a year of wandering, but as soon as he had found safety and sanctuary the urge struck again. He did have to admit that the circumstances behind his travel, as well as the company, were much improved compared to his last venture.  Sure, otters were cute, but they were absolute shite when it came to small talk. Elspeth was certainly an improvement.  He had gotten the impression that she felt somewhat isolated in the Basin, as he did, and had been pleased when she’d agreed to accompany him south.  He had no idea what sort of things lingered in the south of Helovia but he knew one thing for certain, Elspeth would surely not freeze.

The lass was quite the storyteller, and the miles seemed to fade beneath their hooves with no effort at all.  She found her stories about the fanciful, winged creatures she’d met to be amusing, but had taken them in stride.  The lass did keep him on his toes, that was for sure.  But he’d told her that he’d had a similar reaction of surprise when he’d encountered all of the strange creatures that called Helovia home - he’d grown up in a relatively uniform herd.  Surely to the Helovians, his people would be naught but a herd of hairy beasts.  He knew that’d likely inspire a laugh from the lass.

He had been pleased when Elspeth had taken to the cloak he’d given her.  For a moment he’d been concerned, thinking he’d seen ghosts flicker in her eyes.  But he’d allowed himself to resume breathing when she’d reacted with what he could only describe as joy.  He would, however, be the first to admit that he wasn’t the best to attempt to label more nuanced emotions.

Calder had always gotten the impression that Elspeth’s past was more troublesome than she let on.  He remembered how utterly terrified she had been in the threshold and how the very idea of magic was enough to turn the spirited woman into a mere ghost.  She shrunk away from conflict and discord in large groups, but amongst those she was comfortable she was strong willed and steadfast. Not to mention that the lass was a little spitfire if ye let her get on a roll. The last thing that the dappled stallion wanted to do was push the wee mare and make her feel uncomfortable, especially when she seemed to be settlin’ in somewhat.

He was pleased, however, that he could provide some comfort to her.  It was moments when he was curled up near him on a chilly night that he was just pleased he could be here.  While he wasn’t willing to admit it to anyone, save for maybe the deepest part of his conscious, Elspeth had become one of the most important things in this new life he had built for himself. He was just happy he had found her that day, tangled in a tree and ready to strike.  So it was happy thoughts that carried the brute off to sleep.

But not happy thoughts that woke him.  It was the sound of her scream that shook him from his slumber and turned the blood in his veins to ice.  It took him a few panicked heartbeats to realize that the lass was in no danger, at least not from anything he could protect her from.  A nightmare.  Automatically, he reached for her, draping his heavy neck over her sweat-slicked one. “Wake up, lass. Yer havin’ a nightmare. It’s nae real, lass. Yer safe.”  He spoke softly, hoping to soothe her rather than scare her further. “Shh, Ellie, I’ve got ye.”
