A kiss with a fist is better than none

Madness had descended upon Gaucho. He wore it the way a man might wear a sweater into an icy river - initially thinking that it was keeping him warm and not realizing that it would actually be his downfall. And even now, as the cold cloth of insanity clung to his bones, freezing him to death, he didn’t even feel it.

He didn’t even know it was he who was going crazy.

The Wildfire didn’t recognize the world as being any different, despite the fact that it now gleamed in multitude of bright colours and was populated by faces that he didn’t recognize as well as ghosts of those he had once known.

But there was still one thing that he did remember, one face that didn’t swim, or glitch or change.

Ampere’s.

The dun had told Grusha that the reason he hadn’t chased after the blue (other than the fact that he didn’t see her leaving) was because he trusted the members of his herd to take care of themselves. In that regard, Ampere was more than capable. But as the days turned into weeks and weeks descended into months, his resolve that the blue hadn’t been injured weakened to the point of despair.  Which was worse? The thought that she had left them all, uprooted without a word? Or that she had been torn apart by a foe that even her lightning fingers and speed couldn’t save her from? The Wildfire’s madness was caused by a very real parasite, eating away at his brain. But that didn’t prevent scrambled thoughts of Ampere from encouraging its feast. If the bug wasn’t there to drive him mad, the blue surely would have.

And so it was, that on an already sweltering hot Tallsun morning, Gaucho lifted himself into the sky and began to search.

Gaucho hardly noticed the breeze on his face causing beads of tears to appear and sting his eyes. His thick eyelashes remained partially closed to block out the majority of the wind, but even so, the tangible biting breeze didn’t bother him. His mind was elsewhere, on other things.

He would start within Helovia, though already he could rule out a number of locations. He knew Ampere was not in the Deep Woods (he did believe Grusha when she said that she had conclusively searched the area). He knew she couldn’t be in any of the herdlands. She might have lingered in one, as Sohalia had, without him knowing. But not for this long. No, that left only the Wilds. Ampere was as hot blooded as he, and so he doubted he would find her north. The Veins of the Gods was not an especially large place to hide, and the dun patrolled the Halycon flats quite regularly as it was the land the Sun God had shepherded into Helovia.

That left only a handful of places to begin his search. As he had recently been in the riptide isles, the dun glided farther north east, skirting Helovia’s more eastern borders until he arrived at the Green Labyrinth.

Gaucho hadn’t been here before, for anything more than a few moments. This was the land the darkened Moon Bitch had brought, the same Moon Bitch who had used him as a pawn to slaughter so many. Why would he visit her green catacombs? He had no reason before.

But he did now.

Gliding downwards on wings shaky with exhaustion and a body drenched in sweat, Gaucho landed in the green maze, hoping to find the blue within.
