The familiar word from the giant did wonders to further enchant the filly to him - not only did he have a fascinating image but he spoke her language as well! Perhaps he was related to her? An uncle? A brother? Or was this her long-lost father who was nothing but a hazy half-memory to her? She wished her mother was here so that she could ask.

She’s learn his name and ask later, perhaps, or as him herself when she wasn’t so distracted by the bird. His response to her question did not satisfy her curiosity at all - it only sparked more questions, especially when the fire-bird trilled soon after. Vastra’s small face returned to that natural, furrowed frown she often wore when she was trying to riddle out a problem. “What’s dead?” She repeated the new word, rolling it over on her tongue. It felt final.

The next question was fair and Vastra did not mind explaining to this new but familiar stranger. Her gaze flickered back to the bone-bird for a moment, still watching carefully for movement, as if more bodies around it might suddenly be the thing that got it moving. Resolutely, it remained in the sand, as inanimate as ever. So she looked back to the stranger. “I wanted to learn but not scare it. I was getting a little closer each time.” It made perfect sense to her and the simple way that she explained that made it clear that she expected it to make perfect sense to everyone. That had been her technique for many of the creatures she saw in the Throat - she had laid down in the sand for several hours observing some bearded dragons until they started to draw closer to her and she could get a better look. They almost always scattered when she moved, though, and the filly had yet to figure out a way to learn about the creatures of her home without frightening them off.

Or, on the rare occasion, being frightened off herself!
