the aurelight

The Wakiya queen had departed in a glorious storm, leaving Kaj with a gleaming egg and a dumfounded sort of gratitude. He had tried to quell his doubts, his worries, recalling the amused fondness the great bird had displayed in the face of his self-consciousness. He had been around so many companions for so long that taking care of the egg was the least of his worries, and yet he felt as if looking away for scarcely a moment would result in the creature inside dying, or the egg cracking or being stolen. He had not felt this way since Sohalia had moved into the Falls, pregnant with Aleta, and Kaj had fussed endlessly over her. The Aurelight caressed the milky orb with the strong primaries of his wing, staring down upon it in awe. He could not wait until the beautiful creature inside was born, hatching and melding with his own battered, lonely soul.

It seemed she finally decided that his desire to see her was enough, for as he was staring down upon it, a light tapping echoed from within the egg. Kaj stared, unblinking, wondering if perhaps he had been hearing things. But...no, there it was again! Kaj obligingly slid to his knees, feeling anxious and eager all at once. Over time a small fissure grew in the shell of the egg, and Kaj admired the persistence of the Wakiya inside. Already he could feel something shifting as her little beak peeked through the hole she'd torn out of the shell, an odd warbling sound echoing in her throat as if demanding why she could not see Kaj already, It was the strangest thing, he could see colors flashing, reds and oranges of anger and frustration and the clear blue of hope and the yellow of excitement. She had no words to form, no thoughts to share, but her emotions alone were entrancing as they began to tentatively brush and connect with his own mind.

Finally she shattered the top portion of her egg, and Kaj was relieved to discover that she did not appear as a normal newborn bird would. Perhaps it was the length of her stay in the egg, or her magical species, but her eyes were slits of furious ice blue as they peered up through the egg at him. Kaj stared in wonder as she finally crawled and cracked her way through, warbling and hissing grumpily in the grass, tiny useless wings like down against the cracked, dry grass. And then she gazed up at him, same colored eyes staring deeply into one another's shades, and her disgruntlement turned into shades of pink, yellow, and cherry. And Kaj's emotions responded in kind, love springing forth like a waterfall as she finally chased the loneliness away with her bond.

"Arabella," he breathed, as if instinctively knowing the name. The wakiya child preened, a soft, happy chortle echoing in her throat, and Kaj smiled. Arabella.
