A shadow passed overhead. Thinking it a bird at first, a raptor searching for prey or perhaps a heron come to feast on the exposed fish and amphibians she payed it little heed, too wrapped up in her own misery to care. Again the shadow swept over her, blocking the light that poured down like liquid fire through the canopy of leaves. This time Erthë looked up, and blinked in surprise upon seeing not a bird, but a pegasus coming in to land. His approach looked graceful to her, the way he moved in the air appeared almost athletic despite his apparent youth. Was he the same age as her? Looked like it, at least he wasn't a foal anymore and without the bulk of a fully grown stallion.

His landing wasn't quite as elegant, however. Whether because of some miscalculation or from clumsiness she didn't know, but he splatted down in the middle of the pond rather than on the grass beside it, causing mud and slimy water to spray everywhere as he rushed up on dry land. Erthë recoiled hastily but still felt the stinking muck spray across her face and chest, mottling her pale coat with brown stains that quickly began to run and smear.

Lips tightened into a thin line as she gazed back upon the colt - no, the clumsy idiot - and tipped the ears back as he greeted her. It sounded as though he had just realized she was there; she wasn't sure what was worse, that or the mud.

"Hi" she replied, with something biting in her youthful voice. "Nice landing, that was. Did you do that on purpose?"

If he did... oh, there would be hell to pay!

Inching back up onto the grass the girl reached back and began to preen her wings, inwardly grumbling as she removed every speck of dirt that might have reached the soft feathers. She didn't mind dirt on the rest of her, she was used to that, but if her wings didn't work Erthë would be stranded, unable to make a quick getaway should it prove necessary. Some might call it paranoia - she preferred to think of it as common sense. Who knew what could happen on a regular day in Helovia? For all she knew the sky could fall down and it would hardly surprise anyone.
