She has your attention long before she seeks it out. All the cacophonous flapping grabs your ears and slowly your head turns to follow. Dark eyes narrow in what might be disapproval — certainly irritation. You yourself have been so graceless now and then, but today the noise strikes you as youthful, irreverent, a mockery of everything else in the vicinity. Your limbs cry to run, carry you far from here; your heart beats something harsher, angrier, as it thinks about the meaning of respect. And you don't recognize the girl, at first. You know only that she's intruding. That she shouldn't.

Small ears lean down in disapproval as she bounds up toward you. Your own wings clamp against your sides; that bottlebrush of a tail swishes once, hard, back and forth. "Don't care," you spit, like a challenge. Didn't you come here in search of solitude, anyway? Wouldn't you rather be lonely than surprised? Your entire body leans away from her until you sit nearly on your haunches, and then you swing your front end around and trot away, ill temper written all over your face.

It isn't until you've trotted several paces away that some prickling of shame worms its way into your heart. That isn't how Mama taught you to act around strangers, now is it? And it isn't how you make friends, Virga. You sort of think loneliness if preferable to anyone who talks so much, but that's probably because you aren't alone anymore — right? One dark eye tilts just enough to catch her in periphery, whatever she's doing now. Your wings twitch just slightly, and it's a telltale sign of discomfort, as you think about her tumbling around trying to fly and are reminded, shamefully, of yourself.

A sigh; you turn back to the fractious light spilling across the floor as indignation wars with sympathy inside your head. "I'm looking right now," you say at last, as if that suits as an apology. Your tone has softened somewhat, though. You don't quite have it in you to be cruel. "Do you know who built this thing?" You ask her, and it's the closest thing to building bridges you now know.
