There was a moment Aisling thought she night have spied concern in the gruff old man, in the moment’s hesitation as he looked toward the back of the cave. It was gone too soon, however, and her mind convinced herself she must have imagined it. Maybe if he’d let it show, even for a bit longer, she would have softened, but as it was she wanted him gone. For the most part the Weaver’s cave was a welcoming thoroughfare, but with the weaver in hibernation Aisling had no reason to accept others in her space. And Albrecht…he had come to her event at the festival and been rude. He’d come into her home and been rude again! Normally so soft hearted it was rare that Aisling formed a dislike so quickly but perhaps there was something in her own pride that stung at his insults and so her tolerance waned.

Already, she was prepared to tell him to leave when her daughter came careening into the cave in a similar fashion and slammed into the stallion. She tensed, already ready for the girl to take a tumble, but Aisling’s eyes saw the hoof that lashed out to strike her little girl. Eyes wide she let out a howl of outrage. Anger would come later, despite the reflexive origin of the motion, but concern and panic flared life flames in her heart. Laura was so tiny compared to him and who knows what damage even a single kick could inflict on her little body?

With a lurch, Aisling was on her feet and rushing to wedge herself between her daughter and Albrecht, sending him only a furious glare of warning before curling around the girl trying to move her away. “Are you alright, Larue?!” she demanded, already reaching to brush her nose over the girl to search for damage.

They both spoke, the filly and the stallion, and the words drifted into the fuzz of her concerned mom-brain to wipe away that haze. Larue’s question pulled her back, surely if the filly could speak she wasn’t hurt too much, right? “Uh, I—yes. Yes, mo chroi, I did.” She glanced back to the ground, where the little dragon had managed to work a hole big enough for her tiny little head to poke out.

Eyes of deep dark green stared up and into her own and for a moment Aisling stood, mesmerized. The bond began, this sort of reaching, stretching feeling in her very soul that found the same reaching back from that tiny little life. The souls reached, twined, sealed into something warm and enormous and utterly irreversible. Adoration, love, joy, she saw these in the little eyes and more she felt them through the channels between them as the hummed into life.

Delighted, the little dragon let out another excited trill and wriggled, determined to get out of its egg and to Aisling. It lurched forward, and succeeded in rolling it’s egg forward and out of the cloth nest and onto the stone floor of the cave. With another crack, the shell fell away and the ball of damp green feathers and scales sprawled across the floor looking up at the other seeming perfectly pleased with itself.
