And he waited… and waited.
And waited for his own trick to make itself known. Eager apprehension gleamed from his sharp, raptor gaze in the russet shadows, tangled mane and tail swaying with the intermittent evening breeze…
Except there was no evening breeze.
Starkly white ears sweep forward as his thick, swarthy neck craned to the side—what was making his multicolored, coarse locks move, if not the wind? He flicked his tail once, sending the snarled strands flipping through the air—only to see something fall out of it. Or somethings? His bright yellow-and-red ringed irises narrowed on the gleaming, conical lump that now nestled in the dark red grasses.
His pale muzzle reached out, nostrils flared as he scented the strange thing—and it smelled sweet. Whiskered lips parted, taking it greedily into his mouth—and it tasted sweet. Another flick of his tail sent a few more sweets of various sizes scattering to the ground, which he happily lipped up into his waiting mouth.
He then shook his mane, as it had grown heavy with candy snarled in the tangled strands. Some of it when flying to the ground with soft thumps, while others became even more hopelessly knotted into his mane. “Tricks can be delicious,” he murmured around yet another mouthful of candy. His bearded head rose, eyes glancing towards the far-off gather of equines and then to the ripples in the bloodied water where some of the candy had fallen.
And then a round, clear, sugary treat slipped out of his forelock and fell directly over his eye. He squinted with a snort.
until there's no trace left of man
Taking advantage of his temporary curse:
