THE DESERT DREAMS OF A RIVER THAT WILL RUN DOWN TO THE SEA
LIKE MY HEART LONGS FOR AN OCEAN TO WASH DOWN OVER ME

Najya knew the approaching river quite well. When the Thistle Meadow had been her home, of sorts, she had never strayed too far from its banks.  She knew the waters looked calm, but could still be treacherous.  And she knew well that the water never ceased its movement, even in the coldest of winters.

Each of the foxes seemed to have their own idea for how to handle the approaching obstacle, and Najya slowed as she watched the three firey creatures present their own logic for each of their options.  Her curled ears pricked as they each stubbornly held their ground - no fox willing to bend to the logic of the others.  Concern erupted in her belly.  From above, A’mal circled once before spiraling down to land softly on her bondmate’s hindquarters, clicking and chirping in response to the uneasiness she felt.

Najya possessed no wings and had reservations about crossing a freezing river in the midst of frostfall.  If the ice crumbled under not only her own weight, but the weight of so many hundreds of turkeys, they’d all be swept away by the swiftly moving water beneath the ice.  While Najya was a capable swimmer, she was certainly not eager to fight her way through freezing waters while also have to contend with both ice and panicked birds. It just seemed too dangerous. No magic was worth so many lives.

Already a unicorn had spoken out about going around, as did the equine with two dragons she recognized from home.  Soon Najya’s voice joined theirs in favor of moving around.  “The currents beneath the river never cease. The ice may look thick, but there’s no way of knowing if it would hold all of us. Going around would be safest…” she said, calmly, while unconsciously moving to stand nearer to the fire fox called Zippo.
