A full year has passed, perhaps more since losing her mother. It was much more than her mother, rather a way of life that blew with the wind and dissolved with its careless inflictions. She’d been young and full of hope. She’d clung to the idea that the storm hadn’t won just yet. There was a chance that they had survived the terrible gales. That the separation, merely temporary, would come to a close with the arrival of a familiar call, wind swept smells and the sound of mother’s heart pressed eagerly against her ears.

A year had passed, and the girl was still trying to swallow the thorns of their death. Not that she noticed, as she wandered from the sky into the depths of the World’s Edge. All she had was her own thoughts to muse, and they rarely touched on the delicate matter. Strangely, they reappeared in the ugly throngs of spars.

With a heavy sigh she shook her head, her great wings carrying her through the land that would, might, become home. Whatever home would be. The lightest and brightest of her thoughts surrounded her newly acquired rank. That she might be useful and valuable sometime soon, that she could finally have her kingdom to defend from the evils of the world. Not that she really cared for it yet, or had friends or family to defend. Maybe one friend.

Ru’s gaze darted in the direction of the call. It made her snort, clearly amused; because she was beginning to think the same thing. And without a voice, it was somewhat of a nuisance, a haggle, to go about finding a warrior from stranger to stranger. Taking the time to pull out their words, and hoping that they’d keep things simple and short for her.

Trying to draw up enough bravado to answer the call – because crowds and things like that sucked – the child dropped elevation. Just enough to be 5 meters from the snow mounted ground.  Not too long from then she spotted two others; a white and black individual with curious markings. So dark were these they nearly appeared blue, just as the sun hit their hide. A unicorn; with shortened white hair. The other was also a unicorn, perhaps less exotic but no less mysterious. They seemed to exchange words, merely mumbles in the distance – the girl too far to hear them.

I can do this - she coached herself. Anxiety spiking briefly, just enough to send a thrill through her heart, as she landed not far. Gathering her wings together, because she felt more secure and steady that way. She trotted up to them with a trilling sound hanging in the air. A habit of intrigue as it swayed towards them.

They probably won’t understand. But hardly anyone else did, and people caught on fast - so it won’t be a big deal you dummy.

She stopped and dipped her feathered head in greetings. Sweeping her bright eyes across unfamiliar faces.

Eager to begin.
