She wasn’t a ghost. She didn’t keep herself secluded from the world because she desires to slip into the shadows and be forgotten. Though she did keep herself secluded. In this alone she is vaguely like the pair of mares she finds in the Threshold today (not that she knows it). But Syrena keeps to herself for other reasons. One, because it is the only life she knows. Raised by a nomadic mare who, as soon as possible, let Syrena on her own, Syrena learned to fed for herself, by herself, quickly. Two, because there’s really no point in getting attached to your prey. Three, because she mostly just doesn’t like anyone else.

So why then, does she live in the Falls? Why then, does she come to the Threshold? It’s a great question. One that echoes in her head more often than she cares to admit. The reasons are selfish, but that doesn’t shame her. Aren’t all reasons selfish. Isn’t everyone seeking some personal gain out of toiling for a herd, or hiding in the shadows, or whatever the hell it is they all do?

Syrena seeks power. Not titles. Yes, she has one, but it is not what she wants. She wants her power. Every piece of her old siren power that this worthless place can give back to her, she wants. And if she must work for it, then so be it. She would work to become a scrap of the mare she once was.

Voices bring her to the pair of women, with two variations of dogs at their sides. Not dogs, really, but close enough that she sticks to calling them dogs in her head (though not aloud, that would be foolish). Syrena arrives just in time to hear the red and white unicorn introduce herself as Hotaru, Lady of the Basin. Ah. A name she knows, with a face she does not know. She stores this one away though, because it seems important to remember another herd’s monarch, before turning her attention to the darker mare.

This one is familiar, and Syrena remains silent for a moment while she tries to figure it out. From the Falls? Yes, probably. Some waterfall somewhere, anyway. She can’t quite remember, because she didn’t pay that much attention at the time (she still doesn’t, though she’s been trying harder to care). Mostly, she remembers the wolf. No names come to her, but who knows, perhaps they never introduced themselves. Perhaps she just never bothered to learn it at the time. “I know you,” she says in that sing-song, emotionless voice. It’s such a strange sound, one that begs for lightness and laugher and yet never holds it. But somehow, there’s a half question, half statement present in those words anyway.

After a moment, she figures she should say more, because what the hell kind of greeting is I know you, and she’s supposed to be working on her small talk skills (perhaps even go from abysmal to only terrible). “Syrena,” she offers, nodding her head to both the mares, because Hotaru does not know her, and Ghost may very well not remember Syrena much either. She doesn’t expect that the mare would. “From the Hidden Falls.”
