Do you ever have one of those days (months, years) where you just want to mind your own business and it seems like the world is going out of its way to make sure every single bird that flies over your head takes a nice, healthy dump right on top of you?

You know those dumps, the ones that are all sticky and white and get everywhere and require at least five showers to completely get rid of all the evidence before you start feeling clean again.

If you don’t know that feeling… well, then I guess you better just keep hoping you dodge those squishy drippy bombs.

And if you do know that feeling, then at least be comforted by the fact that you are not alone. Because there was someone in the Steppe on a dark, Birdsong evening, lamenting over items that had been stolen from him. It happened every Frostfall, you see - he’d lay down to sleep in the Steppe surrounded by his treasures and when he woke with the Birdsong sun he would find that his stores had been pillaged. It did not matter how well he hid them or how remote of a location he found to hibernate, it always happened. Somewhere, some god was mocking him.

This Birdsong, the only treasure he had been left with was one of the most useless - an egg. What did he want with an egg? He detested fire and so had no way to cook it for food (and besides, he much preferred raw meat and flesh) and could think of no other use for it. It wasn’t even his egg. While he had slumbered, a nest had been made on his head where his crown once stood and it had been laid there - abandoned by its mother and deposited with someone who would just as soon throw it against the jagged rocks.

The yeti was a fearsome creature, twice as tall as the average horse, ape-like and covered in shaggy white fur that was presently stained with blood around his jaw and chest. Two twisted, frost-covered horns curved up from his forehead, supporting the bird’s-nest-crown and the egg that was still resting within it. His jaws were wolf-like, with rows of jagged teeth, and each paw boasted formidable claws.

So yes, very fearsome, but not foolish. The yeti knew that busybody horses would come seeking the egg left in his possession. He knew that he would be able to bargain with them, offer them the useless egg as a prize and they would clamour over themselves for it.

As the northern lights began to dance across the sky, illuminating the snow-covered world below in an aura of greens and blues, the yeti sat and waited. This year, he would change his luck.
