Take just what I came for

The boy and kitsune weren’t shocked by the next set of instructions. They’d grown experienced in the ways of tasks and events, how they were layered and lacquered into either difficulty or mere exploits – testing the waters to see who’d conform for what they truly wanted. Because the prince yearned, and because the fox was a ravenous, devious piece of molten cretins, the two conspired again (the blue one content to see their crown had been accepted, despite the trickery settled along the stone, the same polished, regal smile settled across his mouth), leaving the confines of the cavern to intercept something else – a snack for the Yeti.

The monster was likely due for a veritable feast, but Erebos had no desire to hunt. There were no adversaries skulking in the eaves, no strangers intending to chase away beloved friends. He’d seen enough death in the past season to not warrant his eye upon another corpse (allowing his gaze to settle elsewhere when others had already settled their wares in front of the beast, incapable of basking in their abilities to seize and possess demise), so Orsino busied himself with the polished set of predatory schemes, lingering along a threshold of shadows below treetops and canopies, snatching at a few passing rodents. When his fiendish ways and specious capabilities had managed to earn him several mice and squirrels, the sable companion gathered them all in his mouth and followed after Erebos proudly, tails swishing with eerie, enigmatic delight.

The General, for his purposes, intended to find some suitable plant life to mix in with Orsino’s collection. As he wandered, frowning, hesitant, completely ignorant to which things were truly edible, which could burn, poison, or devour, which could aid and soothe or cause a disaster, he found himself wishing he’d spent more time in the Basin’s greenhouse, or attending an herb lesson. His healing skills were nonexistent, as he spent hours of his day hoping to pulverize an opponent or destroy an enemy, rather than pondering over the purposes of a nearby leaf; he could almost hear the ring of laughter from Enna, had she been able to see him now, staring at a bunch of bushes. The youth snorted once, twice, puttering over a few touches of greenery, before sighing and picking off a few dandelion and juniper berries, uncertain if they’d lend assistance to their cause or drown them in disaster. He shrugged, and Orsino seemed to do the same.

Upon their return, wandering in from the cool midst, they settled much into the same routine as prior circumstances, lowering the food in front of the Yeti’s great, hulking form, the scion bending his head, and bestowing a noble grin. “I hope you enjoy,” he spoke into the hollowed void, not glancing down at the arrangement of berries, dandelions, and rodents, and backed away, waiting for another judgment.

[Erebos and Orsino bring a collection of mice, squirrels, dandelion, and juniper berries.
