As he had suspected, they were not left alone on the border for very long. A familiar voice called out his name and Mesec brightens at the sight of Tiamat. Though their friendship was new, he would be a fool to deny that she had made a lasting impression. It wasn’t often that he met someone so completely friendly, so incredibly optimistic. It would be amazing to talk to her again but it also felt wonderful to be greeted so warmly on the borders of his former home.
He opened his mouth to greet the sea-mare but she closed the gap between them and buried her face in his shoulder, leaning against it. Lyra was just amazed and baffled as he was, her violet eyes watching as Mesec hesitated before reaching over with his muzzle to gently press it against her neck in greeting. This felt… familiar. As though they were old friends greeting each other after a long absence. Surely he could not have made such a good first impression to warrant such an affectionate greeting on their second meeting? Somewhere far away in the Edge, Lucius was laughing and making jokes through their bond about blue mares - which Lyra didn’t get and caused Mesec’s skin to burn with a blush.
He wanted to ask Tiamat if she was alright but she spoke first - her warm voice asking what had brought him to the Basin - and when they pull away from their embrace there’s a smile on his face to match hers. “Everything is fine… or, well, as well as it could be.” Unspoken is the reference to Kaos, to the betrayal of Kisamoa. Before he could explain his reasoning for visiting the Basin, Tiamat noticed the kitsune pup perched on the top of his head and his smile returned brightly. Five small tails were thumping excitedly against the side of his head as Lyra realized that Tiamat was calling her adorable, and she attempted to dislodge herself from her perch so she could properly greet these new friends.
“This is Lyra, I found her soon after we had met.” Mesec explained as he held out a wing a few inches from his body so that Lyra could climb down - but the pup’s excitement stopped her from being careful and she tumbled instead - landing on the ground with a small thud as she attempted to shimmy down Mesec’s wing. She had fallen from much higher heights before and quickly got to her feet to show everyone that she was just fine “I think she likes you two.” Mesec added with a bright laugh as the fallen pup clamoured to her feet and skittered forwards - yelping with delight at this incredible new creature that had whistled at her.
Mesec’s silver eyes turn away from their companions and they catch on the salve on Tiamat’s right cheek and on her neck. Were those… claw marks? Immediately, Mesec felt a chill seeping through his entire body - at once afraid that it had been him. But he quickly remembered that it had been a long time since he had lost control of the warg magic, that he shouldn’t ever lose control again. Instinct had him wanting to reach out to her and his muzzle jerked as though he was about to, but he refrained. Hesitation kept him where he was - mostly because he did not want to cause her any pain. “Tiamat.” Her name was quiet in his voice, already filled with the questions that were coming next - concern softening his gaze and tone. “Are you alright? Was this the bone creature?”
The crowds pressing in around Kaos or whatever that monster had been were extensive, though he recalled seeing her there. How had he missed her getting injured? What might he have done to help? But he knew his attention that day had been focused on keeping Vesper safe.
