Alune was gone. Disappeared after Kaos’s bone monster (—something they had created) in the Spectral Marsh. Part of the King was worried about the Moon-coated man—had Kaos sought to exact revenge on the Moon’s challenge at the Endless Blue by stealing away her Seer? ..Or, perhaps the starry giant had opted to serve the Moon in his homelands one more, where the evening lady reigned supreme and there were no wayward, violent Rift Gods to contend with.
Whatever the cause, their Seer was gone. And, with the Earth God disbanding the Hidden Falls, it left a strong sense of unease in the Elephant King’s barrel. And he knew he was not alone; Alysanne, too, was anxious over the Falls' disappearance. The goddess, though assuredly preferring her handsome, indigo Seer over himself, had heeded his calls once before.
Perhaps now, with his chest laden with worry for her herdlands, she might note and respond to his calls once again. His ears swiveled with doubt. Mbwene (rather unceremoniously) snorted through her long trunk, ’Too misty.’ Her frank assessment of the evening on the cliffs was tart because she was tired, ’Too late,’ she tacked on, tasseled tail swatting in irritation at her wrinkled haunches. It was the middle of the evening, but “I am calling for the Moon, Mbwen,” was his mildly amused, deep rumble.
Then, standing perched atop the cliffs, his low whicker rumbled out in the thickly misted night. It was easily lost amid the muted roar of the rolling waves below. And that was somehow okay with the King—as if it would give some reason for the Moon to ignore him and lessen the apprehension in his chest about the Edge if their patron did not appear.
