S o r e n The sooty colt laid still on the ground, lulled by the warmth that was radiating through his newly born form. Thanks to his mother's careful cleaning, the blood was beginning to circulate through him strongly. Brilliant cerulean eyes were getting adjusted to the luminosity of day, and they glanced around the woods with clear curiosity. It looked as though all the trees grew straight up into the sky. Did they really reach the soft white clouds up there? Suddenly, the little one felt a presence to his side. He turned his ebony face around to see a huge leg standing next to him in the snow. Gradually, his gaze tracked up the leg to find the rest of the body attached. It was a huge stallion! He was as dark as could be, except for his legs and fringes. There was radiant red in his eyes, Soren noticed, and before he could do anything but stare, the behemoth was reaching down towards him. He had not yet learned fear, so the colt was more intrigued than frightened when the dark one touched him as affectionately as his mother had. The massive horned one then spoke, punctuating his words with the same word that lovely pale mother had called him before. Slowly, the dappled foal came to the realization that the tall Unicorn was his father, and that the word was his own name. An accomplished whinny rang out into the Frostfall air. His father began digging at the white ground beside him, and Soren took the cue to stand. With unused, uncoordinated limbs stretching to find purchase on the snowy forest floor, he pushed with what small strength he had summoned. He rose up, away from the ivory cold, and balanced on all four hooves. It was a precarious and wobbly stand at first, but the motions came to him quickly, and soon he was hobbling over to his dam's side. He leaned against her forelegs and wore a proud expression, feeling sure that he'd done well. Inquisitive pool looked from his dam to his sire, reassured by the emotion in both their faces.  |
