The girl hardly moved. She was stuck here before this woman, this stranger, unable to make her brain tell her limbs what to do. Her heartbeat pounded in her ears and her cheeks warmed. She did not know it, but the amiable girl was embarrassed. She was embarrassed that she had stumbled upon the blue lady without knowing, and without intent; she was embarrassed that she was now not able to understand the woman she had so rudely intruded on and explain herself. Little, solid hooves shifted somewhat in the loamy soil, the mists curling around her naked ankles like shackles.
Nothing about this stranger before her seemed to emit the red, flashing light of danger, but Letha's inward desire for self-preservation had always been high. It was what caused her to follow her mother far out of the Hidden Falls when hunger roared in her belly, despite the GoldenShade's stern command to stay with Dragomir. Now, Letha's brain told her turn around, tuck her tail, run and bleat loudly for the safety of her parents. Her body, however, as tiny and rail-thin as it was, would not cooperate. There was something in the back of her mind that was keeping the muscles still, the legs in place.
Maybe it was the way the blue lady before her cocked her head and opened her mouth to speak. Her face did not wrinkle by the mouth and nostrils, nor did her ears turn to pin into her curled mane. Those were the initial signs Letha understood as dangerous. Those were the signs that Letha understood that she was not in the right place, definitely not at the right time, and someone was probably going to bite or kick her. Ocean eyes widened some, the soft waves showing Letha's concern and youthful misunderstanding.
She lowered her head some, ears falling to the side gently, and she nibbled at the grass, never taking her eyes off the blue woman. |
