i want to be wild, beautiful and free
Syrena’s been wandering around on the edge of the island, feet in the water that surrounds them. The Throat still doesn’t feel like home, but she loves the proximity to the sea. She can hear it everywhere she goes, wandering to its edge and letting it wash over her, waves lapping against her legs. The water on the shoreline is warm, turning her orange and red where it reaches. Thea is slithering in the water as a snake, splashing and playing even though she could move seamlessly in the water.
Maybe one day the Throat will feel like home. Maybe one day she’ll stop lamenting the loss of the Falls. But for some reason, that had felt like hers in a way the Throat does not. Not yet.
It takes her a moment to notice the mare standing on the other side of the bridge. For all her complaining and worry about being stuck on an island, Syrena hasn’t actually left since getting a key. She’d hating flying over once, and she wasn’t sure she’d ever get used to her feet leaving the ground. Thea, however, has other plans. As soon as spots the girl, she slithers out of the water and turns into a kingfisher, making her way over to greet the stranger faster than Syrena can follow her.
She finally makes it to the bridge, the weird fire-wings kicking in and taking her over. She hates every second of it. But Thea is already trilling at the girl, flitting about in happy circles. “Sorry about her,” Syrena says in her usual deadpan voice, her feet coming back to the earth as relief washes through her. She hates flying. “Syrena, and that’s Thea. Can I help you?”
