DRU
We shiver as we step into the cold, cold night then we’re running, we are running now!
Oh, Miss Plain Jane! Isn't it marvelous how that, for once, you were not overlooked? The commander called you capable of representing the herd. Yes, you - the one who had previously been destined to remain as a mere background character! Now you're decent enough at something to get a story woven about you like you've always wanted. Be careful though, mon cherie. With one wrong mistake heroes can easily fall from their pedestals and be labeled as nothing more than tragic heroes. We wouldn't want that after you've finally gotten your chance in the spotlight, now would we?

To say the mare was shocked when the commander approached her with a mission - an important mission - would be an understatement. She figured he would have gone to Erik for a task such as this. Yet there he was, standing in front of her, and briefing her about what she was to be doing. Dru had still been shell-shocked when she told her parents she'd be gone for a while. Their warm and wide smiles made her heart quench with a feeling she wasn't familiar with. Pride.

With promises of bringing souvenirs back to her younger siblings, Dru launched herself up into the peaceful skies. The air was like a friend to her, the wind gently whispering sweet nothings into her ears. Ha, but that would be more akin to a lover! Either way, the pegasus was far more comfortable closer towards the heavens than she was on the earth. There was no where else that she could feel so capable and free.

The sun, once so high and bright in the sky, began drifting lower and lower. In the distance the moon could be seen gradually peeking its head out from its slumber. Dru did not wish to dilly-dally but darkness would soon succumb her. It would be the most practical if she settled down for the night and continued her journey when the sun awakened once more.

Through the dimming light, her eyes managed to scout out a forest. That would provide sufficient cover and shelter for the night. Wide wings stretched outward as they allowed the wind to brush through her feathers. Her descent was slow and certainly showed the mare's unwillingness to leave her skies. Unfortunately, all good things must eventually come to an end.

When her hooves touched the ground she evaluated her surroundings. Things looked much different than when she had a bird's eye view. Darkness devoured the forest yet, at the same time, something about the trees beckoned her forward. As if cast under a spell, Dru found herself pulled further into the forest. Every single instinct was screaming at her to turn the fuck around but for some reason her brain wasn't functioning properly. Looks like someone got into the fermented fruit.

One more step forward and -

and everything shattered? Literally, the floor underneath her hooves began to cave in from underneath her (she didn't weigh that much - geez!). Her stomach lurched as her heart tried to evacuate out of her chest. Frantically, the mate tried to lunge away from the sinking ground.

Too late.

A scream was caught in the back of her throat as she felt herself tumbling down, down, down. Trying to slow her descent, perhaps even stop it, her wings expanded. Bad idea. Very, very bad idea. Branches, bark, and leaves immediately attacked her extra appendages the moment they left her sides. Luckily, she did stop eventually as her wings were caught on a branch.. until that branch broke.

With a soft thud (although the landing certainly didn't feel soft by any means) her body hit the forest floor, groaning as twigs dug into her side and her head bounced against the ground. What in the world just happened..? Dru struggled to grasp her fall from the sky? Was it the sky if she just fell into more trees? Ugh, her head was spinning too much to comprehend what the hell was going on. A wing gingerly touched her throbbing head as her eyes rapidly blinked, trying to adjust to the dark lighting of her surroundings.

In a whirlwind of a daze, Dru wasn't able to truly realize to depth of the predicament she was in. All she could think of was the cuts and bark stabbed into her wings. Oh, not to mention the floor freaking collapsing but there had to be some logical explanation for that.. But if it was some weak spot in the terrain, wouldn't she be in some underground cavern?

If only the stunned mare withdrew from her thoughts long enough to realize how much of a sitting - laying? - duck she was for any predators on the hunt.
