the ocean is calling, and i must go
Waves crash upon the shore. White-capped waves, foaming and angry, churn and twist with the ebbing and flowing tide. Though the end of the world seems so near, carried upon hushed whispers and baited breath, still the ocean follows its course, unperturbed by any rumors that the mortals may be sharing. The ocean is forever, and despite the way it seems to be alive with its heaving choppy waves, it does not discriminate. Perhaps dug by the heel of a leaping god, or a bottomless grave dug by otherworldly forces, the sea is as it has always been, and will remain as such forever. Kissed by the horizon, warmed by the sun, chilled by the starry night, it calls out, beckoning, urging the curious closer, stealing wandering hearts away with its siren song.
Bobbing within the waves is a huge heaving chest, stolen from a storm wrecked ship swallowed, along with its captain, by the murky depths of the sea. Water has leeched into the wooden planks, and rot has threatened to eat away at the bottom, threatened to spill the loot upon sandy floors and bottomless trenches. But somehow, fate has smiled upon the treasure chest, and it has been delivered towards the pristine beach that lines the southwestern shore of Helovia.
But, fate cannot offer easy deliverance for the sea-swept bounty, and as it begins to beach itself, a rolling wave sneaks upon it and smashes the waterlogged case, shattering its wooden shell. Some prizes are stolen, dragged back by the tide as payment for delivery. Despite the sea taking its price for passage, across the white sands treasure is strewn, trinkets and jewelry, weapons and armor, all glittering and shining in the fresh light of dawn.
Above, gulls cry, seeming to call both invitation and warning, encouraging all to come and collect their stead, but to avoid greed, for perhaps the ocean shall steal the greedy and envious away next. For the ocean does not discriminate, and is not effected by the passing of time, or the coming of an end.
