Stubbornness and persistence were traits she had to have inherited from her mother, Erthë mused. It was the only explanation why she kept looking for someone who didn't make a lot of effort to be found, whose presence in her life had diminished as the years went by but who always existed there, like a dimly shining star in a sea of night.

The rain came down in a thin drizzle as the young mare picked her way across the elevated meadow. It was damp and cold and dreary, the clouds slung so low over the mountaintop that the journey up the steep trail had become a treacherous game of connect the dots in the mist. Upon reaching the peak however, the little mare was rewarded with the sight she had been hoping to see; a tall stallion, pale as the clouds themselves, as solitary and quiet as she had always known him.

"Father" she greeted him as she approached, face serious but with a smile glittering in her eyes. "I found you."

Reaching out a cold pink nose towards him, Erthë regarded her sire, searched his body and face for something, anything at all that might reveal what he had been up to since they last met. His face was so familiar to her and yet it seemed strange at the same time. Details she had never noticed before stood out like a silent scream; how blue the marks on his face was, how solemn the eyes, how young he really was. Children always had a tendency to think of their parents as stagnant in time, unchanging and eternal - but Vadim was not just a father, but a person in his own right as well. Just like she, he probably had dreams and hopes, wishes to fulfill, worries that gnawed at night and problems both small and insurmountable.

It was a strange notion, and unsettling. She did not want to think of him that way. Better he just remained her father, so she could stay upset with him and keep nagging over how he always left her without a word.

That was another habit she had inherited, apparently. She made a note to tell Maude that, next time the girl complained.
