Wearing a white bridle that hangs too big over his shoulders, little defective colt travels farther from his mother than he ever has before. He doesn't know what a god is and he doesn't know what a friend is, but he is in desperate need of both. He knows things happen here- that this is where his brothers were granted their magic. He knows this is where Archibald found his companion, and he knows he wants the same. He knows little else.

But the whispers tell him that he is not great, and they tell them that he is not strong. His mother told him to be both, as he bathed in the blood of his father and drank the elixir of the stallion's life as it flowed from his still corpse. He supposes that perhaps, if not alone, he can become these things. He is not quite sure what these things are, but he has done a poor job of doing them alone.

And he feels alone. Almost every day, even curled beside his brothers, nestled in the crook of his mother's downy fur, he feels apart from them. They are one in that they breathe together, obey together- but perhaps it is simply age that keeps them apart. Unable to speak, he struggles to communicate. Unable to communicate, he struggles to interact. Unable to interact, he retreats into the whispery den of his mind, where three ghoulish voices haunt him with the factuality of his ineptitude.

The faint glow of the bridle becomes a stranger in the night- he fears its presence, wishes to take it off, rid himself of the burden for all of eternity. But whatever has placed it there maintains it there, and it maintains its viselike grip like a python, choking him. The whispers say it is a mark of their success. They say that they have won at last. He doesn't know what that means, but it scares him. And he knows that he does not want to be alone tonight.

Little defective colt looks up to the sky wonderingly, wondering if anyone there can know his thoughts. He wonders what a wish is, and if there is such a thing. He wonders if one can be granted.

[Knox, though newly born and unable to speak, would like a companion. I would like it to be a female flat coated retriever.]
