Nayati
the flower that smells the sweetest is shy and lowly

Nayati didn’t expect for anyone to notice her, a tiny little thing without a mother. She was a ghost in the Foothills, a small alabaster wraith that was only glanced at before one’s gaze turned away. Nobody really cared, and why should they? Nayati knew she was a waste of space, of life. Her scar reminded her every day of that. So when movement came from outside her tiny space of comfort, she froze. Every part of her freezing up, sobs quieting. Quiet, quiet, be quiet. If you’re quiet they won’t hurt you. Be good, be good, be good! If they don’t see you they won’t hurt you! Rules that she had learned long ago when she had to stay hidden to avoid another beating. Soft, dark orbs came into her view. Huge, scared rubies stared back at the mare, tears soaking her small white face. The mare’s face was sweet and calming, and Nayati trembled as she looked back at her. Her words were kind and soothing, and Nayati took a deep shaking breath in response, trying to calm down like the pretty lady told her to.

It was hard for Nayati to process her words at first, and she was slipping. World going dark and fuzzy around her. She was prone to panic attacks, one of which she was having. Every limb froze and she merely remained where she was. It was mild and she knew it, struggling through it. She probably looked so foolish, hardly even breathing, eyes wide and nostrils flared. How long it took her to resurface she didn’t know, but when she was able to breathe normally and move a little, she focused on the mare. Moving very slowly closer, face nervous and wary. Would she hurt her? No, no…she had said that nobody would. Nayati’s muzzle trembled and she extended it very, very slowly towards the woman. Giving a tiny sob when they brushed, as if it was the first time she’d ever touched somebody. Moving a little closer, though she remained halfway inside the brush. Remaining on her knees, still trembling. ”Y-You won’t h-hurt me?” Voice a tiny, frail whisper. Large rose eyes staring at her, scared. She had believed Svetlana, Abby, and Roma when they had promised her she would not be harmed. And yet they had disappeared, abandoning her. They had hurt her inside, where it counted most. How was she to know that this beautiful mare wouldn’t do the same? Even if she looked so sincere, and her words were so kind…Nayati inched a little closer, eyes glancing around at the woods around them in fear before turning her gaze back to Resplendence. It was dusk by then, and she was starting to fear the darkness. It had been late at night when Mother had driven her away and nearly killed her, and the emotions were tied deeply with the hour of darkness, leaving her vulnerable.

the rose shadows said that they loved the sun, but they also loved the dark,
where their roots grew through the lightless mystery of the earth. the roses said: you do not have to choose.
