In a flurry of motion that he starts, they begin. Every thought is lost in a rush of now, now, now. Pulse is jumping wildly within his body, an animal inside. Yes, this is what he has been craving. Ever since his arrival, he had been aching for a niche to carve out, a place to call his own. This is it. This is his place in the world. The calm of his face has been broken completely, a small grin upon his aureate visage that is almost wild. Eyes are sharp- shards of aquamarine that promise Maskan that no matter who leaves as the victor, Kaj was going to give his all, because that was who he was. This was his world, and there was no way he was going to go quietly from it.

But now- battle. Previous musings were proven correct, Maskan having the advantage of momentum with their large bodies. Kaj knew it was inevitable, he would have had to have made a move at some point. Avoiding it any longer was foolish, and the fire of need had already driven him forth before patience could win out. Instead of diving away Maskan turned a broad shoulder inward, and they are in close quarters. It was not what Kaj had intended or desired but he is in a haze at that point, his own blood pounding so hard in his ears he almost feels dizzy. The sound of sliding, and the sudden lurch of the shadow stallion's hulking frame is enough to alert Kaj to what had transpired without having to fully see the sudden halt of his partner's body. His hooves find flesh, but his own wing is a blur of color that blocks his view. A jolt went up his forelegs from the blunt impact, a blow he had not anticipated but didn't regret. Perhaps not a smart move to move his wing in such a way, but by the time his forelegs are back on earth it has passed harmlessly over Maskan. The massive devil had successfully evaded him, but with the passing of his appendage his vision had cleared. The act twisted him somewhat to the right with the drag of his massive wingspan, but it didn't disrupt his forward motion much. Large chest huffed with excitement more than toil, eyes bright with exhilaration and lust for battle.

He spins, a motion that Kaj only has a few brief moments to prepare for. The coil of hind muscles is familiar, and he must act. Stay close or move away? But Kaj's body had decided for him already, even if his mind was a few seconds behind. The lurch that had brought him forward to attack Maskan was still thrumming through him. His body was in motion; it brought him forward, a slice of pain lacing up his right side as impact came to him. It was not a solid strike from Maskan, but it grazed him hard and would surely bruise, perhaps even bleed. Kaj winced when his hind legs came forward to push him onward and his right side twinged angrily at the action. The brute certainly had a kick to go with his massive frame.

Maskan shoved to the left, but Kaj was already headed diagonal into the man towards their right. They would surely collide, and Kaj had a single breath to bring his wing up high to avoid it being injured. Teeth flashed, and instinct drove his head down until he was nearly worshiping the earth with his nostrils- oh damn that sand burned!- to avoid the blows. The collision had taken all his momentum, but with his head down he had a better hold on his balance. Cranium already lowered, and knowing he didn't have much time before the brute changed direction with his teeth, Kaj took a daring chance-trust yourself- you can't let him win- and flashed his own teeth towards the hefty foreleg of his opponent, hoping for a good blow. It wasn't easy to kick out and especially up at the same time, something he was hoping for to avoid injury. The furious wind made his forelock sting against his face, eyes squinting as he tried to see well enough to aim. He needed to get away in order to obtain a better view. Grunting, he shoved his right shoulder towards the soft spot right behind Maskan's elbow, hoping to drive into his ribs and knock him away or shove the breath out of him. Kaj hoped that the massive push would get Maskan far enough away to gather himself correctly and let his mind free itself from instinct to protect someone who didn't exist. This was a friend, an ally he had to remind himself. You have no one to protect, Kaj.
