Wake up, little one

The child stirred from her place upon the ground, stirred and blinked sleepily against the leaf-dappled light. It is time, dear child. The voice was soft, ancient, and it hummed through her mind as no more than an echo of her own thoughts. It was instinct that told her to listen, a deep awareness that she could not have explained even if she had the words to do so.

With a sigh - she was so very, very tired - the delicate filly gathered her legs beneath her and pulled her small body up. It was clear, then, that she was very young, and very small. In fact if any were to spot the tiny girl they might wonder what she was doing here, and why she was alone. Where was her mother? Where was her family?

Ah but she turned to the trees and smiled (for she was at the outskirts, at the edge of this strange land, in the thickest part of the forest). “Hello ma,” she whispered, stepping forward (surprisingly steadily) and placing a whiskered kiss to the rough bark of the nearest oak. “Hello pa,” she murmured next, and now her lips found the wide berth of a pine. A giggle followed abruptly, and the silver dapple child kicked up her heels and bounced a few steps before whirling back around to the trees. It was the innocent gesture of a child, one too naive to fully realize the gravity of her situation.

It was cool, but she seemed not to notice. With eyes like the ivy in the forest she twirled and danced and laughed, and when she was tired she leaned against the steady bark and sighed, happy. Happy, but (and this she noticed distantly, as if it were not really a part of her) hungry. For this was no world for a girl-child to be alone. Not even one as she, this little nymph of the trees.
