Indirectly, picking up on the hum of emotions and thoughts swirling amongst the trio of dragons, Smoke learned something of the severity of the situation. She could feel the echoes of Lazulli's agony of being blocked from Gossamer in Zaffre's own anxiety. It made her itch, the skin over her withers twitching at her own inability to do anything to help her friend. At least Gossamer was listening, receptive to the compassion of Weyrleader and Healer.

Dark eyes and jade eyes lifted at the warbled note from the golden Akaith, curiosity giving way to excitement in the dragon and hope in the mare. A soft trill was all the answer Zaffre gave before he lent his strength of mind and will to the queen, bolstered by Smoke's freely lent and considerable force of will. There was a moment of silence, of breaths held, before the blue felt the mental walls shatter before Akaith's will, reforming at her whim into a free passage once more.

Voice lifting in a celebratory melody, Zaffre lifted his wings and spread them to catch the sunlight. What at first was simply shadowed pale membranes became backlit, the darker coloration of their tops diluted into a sapphire hue that fell between the two extremes of his colorations. Jewel-bright, they waved gently in the air as he sang in celebration of life and bond and sunlight and warmth. He didn't understand why anyone would be so gloomy when the sun was shining so warmly and the light was reflecting so prettily off the waters. It was a good day. His bonded's hatchling had grown up and left the nest, but remained in the territory. Her older hatchling was strong and capable and fully independent, and there was always the possibility of another, should a male prove worthy.

Catching his thoughts second-hand, Smoke chuckled at her blue. So optimistic an outlook on hatchlings for a dragon who'd never successfully participated in a flight. Then again, he did take a paternally protective interest in her own offspring, so she really couldn't say anything against him. Indeed, she could only agree with him. It had taken a while for her to reach that level of mellow contentment with life that Zaffre always seemed to have. The day was fresh, the weather good, the company more frequently acceptable than not. So what if she no longer had the weight of responsibility bearing down upon her? So what if she had no stallion to stand beside her so faithfully as Mirage's hybrid mate did? She had Zaffre, and her friends when she sought them out. Which she didn't do nearly frequently enough.

"Gossamer..." she murmured, trying to think of some gentle way of telling her friend what she had learned. "No matter who stands with you or who lets you down, you will always have Lazulli. He is first and foremost, most faithful and always loyal. Just as Zaffre, just as Akaith. You will never walk alone so long as you have him, and you owe him greatly for all that he has always been there to give you, unquestioningly." With gentle affection she lipped the pale mare's forelock, taking away any malcontent her gently stern lecturing may have aroused. It was the lecture a mother may have given an erring child, given with good intentions. Odd, somewhat, considering Smoke was youngest amongst them.
