LYNX She pauses when he reveals his face, stares, as if she knows he is familiar but cannot understand why. Has it really been that long? He doesn't think so, but she was young when he found her, and he supposes it's possible that her memories have faded, especially since they remained together only a few days. Yet, she does seem to remember something, and so he remains still when she reaches out, keeps from flinching as she lightly traces his scarred flesh. Finally, the cursed horn shows some worth. She pulls her lip up, memorizing his scent, and he can see the recognition flash through her eyes. He is known now, and for a moment he thinks everything is ok. He will have purpose again, sheltering the girl and protecting her from the world. They will be family again, and he will not have to be alone anymore, shunned as a monster and traitor. He should have known better. Instead of the happy reunion he imagines, he gets a simple word. Alone, and he knows it is his fault. Though she had been the one to wander off, he should have followed. Should have searched more, instead of giving up. He failed her, and he can see from her haughty stance that she is not much interested in reconciliation. Why should she be? He hadn't gone after her, hadn't found her and protected her the way he was supposed to. She has every right to feel nothing, to turn from him. But he can't let her go. Instead, he steps forward, stretches up to touch muzzles, silently apologizing for his failure. A low hum escapes, their former way of speaking. He wonders if she will relent, will return the soft drone. She used to love humming, once upon a time, before she became lost. Will she still love it? He doesn't know, but he has to try, reaching out in the only way he can think of. No matter what has happened, she is still his daughter.  |
