Fence's delicately thick body hummed and bobbed, each muscle within him strummed as if to take on a certain tune. It was maybe too clear that he was trying to dispel the sour sadness that had settled over them in the threshold, but whatever his intentions, he managed to ward off the terror of nighttime just a little bit longer. They arrived at the Threshold by early evening, with Fence moving slowly and carefully to accommodate the poor mare's apparent exhaustion.

He only hoped he could make her feel welcome here. Maybe once he would have thought differently of her, but now he had nothing but an earnest desire to help. His tail flicked jauntily from side to side, brushing his gaskins and mussing the stray ribbons and hairs fallen from the once tidy braid. Though he watched the other mare, closely, his mind wandered to the beat of his step and the rhythm of his motion. Without realizing, a hummed tune sneaked from between his tightly closed lips, until he was carried away with the fervor of a long lost memory and singing out in a full and powerful voice:

Vetsherni zvon,
vetsherni zvon,
kak mnoga dum
navodit on

His voice rang out in a humble vibrato, but it was not skill that gave life to the words, regardless. It was a rediscovery of something known once long ago, a hymn from when he had been just a colt running playfully by his father's side.

O yunýkh dnyakh
f krayu radnom,
gdye ya lubyil,
gdye otshi dom."

The song came to a premature end in its own way, fading from him like the last sunbeam of Orangemoon. Unable to keep the smile from his eyes, he turned to Janus. "Sorry, miss Janus, I'm not sure what overcame me," he excused, letting heat flush his cheeks in slight embarrassment. It was strange how lately he acted more like a nervous yet caring child than the old casanova he had once been. But the times had changed, and so had he. "It's just an old traveling song my mother had used to sing to me," he said, sharing each thought as he remembered it. "Perhaps I could teach you, some day." The offer was genuine, one made out of friendship. He wanted her to feel safe, just as his mother had made him feel as a colt. He remembered, now, her svelte figure—a coal black interrupted only by her caring green eyes. For some time that was all he had been able to picture, but now the words of every lullaby and travel song called out to him.

Fence hadn't even noticed the moment he crossed the border. Enraptured by the memory of an old song, he had let almost everything else fade away. But now his blue eyes wandered and he took in the familiar sights of home. Yes, he thought as he spoke, "We're home."
