 Those others, they said to follow the path this way and so she did. Cautiously, like a cat, she creeps across the moss and through the hills. The voices of those strangers she ran into, the ones who pointed her here, keep ringing in her mind; bouncing around as she looks from side to side. Her dark eyes swallow the landscape, the dancing shadow across the white snow and the bending skeleton branches of sleeping trees. It’s ever so quiet as she passes into the threshold. She’s unaware of the boundary line, but somewhere inside she can feel the air change. She stops and lets her head fall to the ground, her pink nose and prehensile lip brushing the thin layer of icy snow below her. She smells others, and other things – foreign things; things she cannot categorize inside her churning mind. She lets her head slowly rise again and her ears lean forward. Sounds are abundant here too, sounds she’s heard and others she hasn’t. Birds are familiar, but stranger things chime in the frozen wind along with the songs of birds. She continues walking across the open meadows and again through a dark, mossy [& snowy] forest. She arrives into another open space, the base of the mountains and hills. She keeps her senses open to the approach of someone, anyone or anything. She is alert and her skin twitches over ready muscles; tail flicking anxiously.
