Still trying to wrap her mind around the idea that one of the herd's constants was gone, Kimber walked. It was easier to think and move than to huddle beneath a tree in disbelief. Why was it that tragedy and trauma followed in her hoofsteps, no matter how hard she tried to make everything good? No matter the brave, cheerful face she put up for the world, and for herself? Father had died before she was born, home had been lost when she was barely old enough to keep after Mother on a long trek, then lost again so recently.
And now? That handsome painted stallion and his brown dragon she'd seen around the herd were gone. Dead. Murdered. Who would do such a thing? And why? Frustrated with her lack of answers, she lashed her tail against her haunches, stinging against her hocks. What next?
Shadowing her footsteps, still short enough to pass unaffected beneath the aggravated flick of his bonded's tail, paced Kaiden. The young kitsune whined anxiously at the emotions roiling beneath the deceptively calm surface of the mousey colored grulla who shared his soul. Electricity crackled between the five tips of his tails, dancing over the foggy colored lengths of the bushy extremities that swayed through the air. He didn't really understand what was bothering her, only that he wanted to make her feel better.
