Long legs carried the lanky chestnut with ease over unfamiliar terrain. He was exploring again, stretching out of his solitary funk in order to see more of the lands. Trees surrounded him this evening, their branches occasionally dipping low enough to threaten to tangle in the barbed horn that sprouted from his forehead. So he carried his head low, allowing himself to fall into an ambling pace.
These lands were rich with the scent of other unicorns. But none familiar. It was a pity, really. On occasion he caught familiar scents on his wanderings, but they were always old. Too old to track. And changed by the turning of the seasons. But there were other things, more interesting things, on the air tonight. Two equine scents, fresh to any nose, overlay the unicorn ones that clearly lay claim to this land.
Lacking anything better to do than seek out drama, he diverted his path toward that of equine and charcoal. Lingered in the shadows for a while as he watched and listened. Debated what to do. Stay here, where the night's shadows deepened his liver coat to black and hid him away from star and moonlight, to observe this scene unroll before him... or play a part.
At last he decided with a lash of his tail against his haunches before approaching the little gathering with a jaunty gait. His head had lifted, and his green eyes were bright and alert. Deliberately he came to a halt off to one side and at a carefully calculated point between equines and unicorns. "You needn't be so rude." His tenor voice chimed out as he regarded the bay stallion who'd taken charge of the situation. "It doesn't look good on you. They're merely visitors, not enough in numbers to be a threat, much less old enough." He wrinkled his nose and snorted softly.
There was a vibrant twinkle in those emerald eyes as he studied the strangers each in turn. He was thoroughly enjoying himself. He had a brief thought to introduce himself and attempt to divert energies toward something else entirely, but decided to let things unfold from here.
