Many long days and nights had been spent alone in this cave he called home. Tucked back into its shadows, he had hidden away from the winds and the blowing snow that swept in from the mountainside. Overcast afternoons and sunny mornings had been spent wandering the borders, keeping a watchful eye out for any signs of intruders who might be so bold as to cross onto their lands. So far, his searches had been met with no excitement despite the threats that hung in the air, and despite the lack of action he found himself increasingly grateful for the slowing of pace.

Though winter was upon them, he felt as though the snow was sapping energy from him when usually it only served to replenish his liveliness. All the focus was making his head hurt when usually his duties only tested his physical strengths, as opposed to mental aptitude. He wasn’t stupid by any means, but suddenly having to keep track of comings and goings when usually he was used to simply enjoying the scenery put a whole new type of stress on him. He enjoyed all the work he was receiving, but the exhaustion and lack of sleep was suddenly catching up on him along with the cold.

Deep in the back of his cave, he lay curled up on the downy insulation of his wings, looking out at the falling snow as it fell like a curtain alongside the cliff. Each night he would return to the gaping mouth in the mountainside to rest, as it was the only place he felt safe and only accessible to those with wings. Tonight, however, it lacked its usual comfort and security, and instead felt empty and void of its warmth. The silence that surrounded him was deafening, when usually the wind softly hummed him to sleep as it curled into the sharp corners of stone.

He had tried to sleep, but his efforts were met only with restlessness and unease. Each night he thought of her, many miles north in the icy grasp of the Basin where she was sheltered from him. How long would it take him to reach her? Maybe an hour, if the winds were in his favor. He cursed the aches and stiffness in his joints, but he just could not shake the feeling of emptiness that had buried itself in the whole of his heart. A soft groan escaped his chest as he slumped to the side, his chin pressing into the icy stone floor of the cave, bright green eyes searching the darkness beyond the walls of his home. If only he was not tied to his duties to the Grey as he was, he might have more time to spare.

However, he could not bring himself to close his eyes once more or brush off the feeling of loneliness that had settled in his chest. Despite his exhaustion, he would not simply lie there when he could feel her pulling him north. Perhaps it was only weariness that had led him to such delusions, but he was determined to see her once more. It had been weeks since their last encounter, and he was willing to sacrifice a few precious hours of rest if she would be there. Even if flying to the Basin meant meeting only ice and snow, at least the cold would numb his aching heart.

Finally lifting himself from the hard floor, he wandered out to the cave’s ledge. The wind was gentle as it tossed his curled mane across his neck, and the sky was clear and dark as the snow slowed and the clouds receded. Casting a final, lingering glance toward the snowy fields and white-capped peaks of his home, he dropped from the stone face of the cliff and spread his wings. Icy air hissed through his ears as he rose above the dark treetops, his internal compass guiding him north toward the Steppe, where he hoped she would be waiting for him.

The air was calm as he made his way over land and toward the dark body of the sea, frost clinging to his feathers as he rose higher into the sky. His markings glowed brightly like beacons in the darkness, pale teals and greens springing to life upon his charcoal hide like faded stars. Though the journey from the edge of the Foothills to the Steppe was a long one, it hardly felt like minutes of flight time before the ghostly shapes of mountains appeared on the horizon. He began his descent early, slowing his airspeed to bring him down lightly onto the shore.

He didn’t know where to start looking for her, or whether or not he should call out. The snow was soft and pillowy beneath his feet as though he was walking on clouds, but he could see no signs of life in the surrounding area. Perhaps she would be tucked safely away in the Basin for the night, but regardless of her whereabouts, he would continue searching until the first light of day hit the horizon. Through the fog of his exhaustion, he set his course west toward the mountains that lined her homeland, choosing his steps carefully over ridges of ice and wind-blown stones.

A distant light caught his eye as he moved quickly through the snow, and he turned his head toward its source. Already excitement sparked in his nerves, but the pale light was suddenly hidden by shadow and blowing snow. “Chernobyl?” He called out softly, though his voice was carried away by the wind. It could have been a trick of the light, simply a reflection off the ice, but he could not turn away. He twisted in his tracks and set off into the darkness once more, turning his head blindly this way and that, his eyes squinting against the snow for another glimpse of something.

Finally, he saw her. He had approached her from behind, and her head was hung low as the wind tangled her mane. Hanging from her hair were two pale feathers, the tips glowing a ghostly green that matched the feathers of his wings. Stepping forward with renewed vigor, he reached out to brush his muzzle against her shoulder as he approached. “Awfully late night to be out alone. Might you want some company?” He whispered softly into the curve of her neck, breathing in her scent as though it would give him life. His energy felt renewed in her presence, as if every ache in his body was washed away by her light.
