The ocean sighs with a gentleness as each wave falls in a lull upon the shore. She is eternally breathing, moving, living. In response a squall picks up and dances in brief eddies around the surface, rippling the azure flesh of the sea.

All seems normal.

To anyone who's had the opportunity to live long enough and compete in a complex social structure however, you'll know there really is no normal. That being said, it was not, after all, normal.

A sudden spark of blue lights in the see a horse length out, brief then gone like fireflies tangled in salt instead of leaves; drowning. More began to appear, seeming to grow with every lap of water on the beach. Eventually the bio-luminescence grew, beautiful, yet so exotic it might be frightening - until the tide crashed vibrant sapphire. Each pulse of the sea's heart was a hum of blue on the pale coast as the organisms danced and somehow burned in the cool water.

One place very near to you however, was different from the rest.

Instead of the usual pattern of the shore and the crash of the sapphire lights upon its gentle slope, there was a dark and jagged shape that the glow moved around. Their light gave the outline of the jagged material, misshapen and dark, as everything was these days.
The object was sunken somewhat in the sand, a grave of sorts dug by the tide yet with every fresh wave the thing seemed to move then sag in the water as it pulled away threatening to wrench it back out to the depths even as the current sealed it in.
The ocean has always had its contradictions, soft and cruel, beautiful and treacherous all at once. She sought to strand this dark shape in the same moment she tried to send it back afloat. It left the item swaying back and forth - it appeared heavy.

Closer inspection will reveal driftwood.
It's light enough to grasp in your mouth and of a shape that it is not overly cumbersome, but neither is it small. It twists back upon itself three times in a non-symmetrical way and many pores and grooves give a unique texture to its earthy hide.
