I had been standing by when the cantering babes came into our home, their faces sweaty—each covered in his or her own layer of dirt from travel. They were escorted by Shadow, a lady I hadn’t seen in weeks; now she miraculously appeared again. We wouldn’t get to greet each other, nor even share a smile. “The Edge,” they cried in broken words, their sonant’s accented with gasps and strained panic. “War!” My ears pricked forward in interest and every muscle grew tense out of shock. ‘War?’ I thought grimly. The Edge was under siege, calling for our aid. Kri and Sumati were nowhere to be seen. When it became apparent that neither was going to show; (at least for the task of passing out instructions.) I sent an armload of warriors to the battle in the North. ‘Aid in whatever way you can,’ I said to them.

A handful, including myself remained at home.

It was a lucky thing indeed that a good majority of warriors remained. A day or so passed, or perhaps it was a few hours (who could tell?). Their cries of vengeance rang loud and far. I saw them from the skies, one by one. Like army ants they came to our sands for blood, and it was hot blood they would receive. Fina flew beside me, her predator eyes sending me shots of those below through our mental bond, she was eager for horse meat today. ‘Go’, I whispered. She turned to me in confusion, pushing her wings fast to fly alongside my crown. “You must find our other allies…in the marsh.”

“No. I fight.” She hissed accusingly, and I scowled. There was no time for arguments. Borderline wanting to yell, I turned to look at my friend mid-flight, “Do as I say and sound the alarm!” Fina paused, looking at me with mixed emotions. One such being pain, she was fearful of leaving me alone. Urging this foolishness aside I added, “Call upon those that gave their word.” The sentence had a final note, no quarter needed to be given at this point. I sent her a visual of who she was supposed to grab. Finally, the proud bird caved in with a disgusted grunt like hiss. Before she sped off toward the marsh I gave her a feather. One of my golden ones, surely their leader would remember Throat’s General from our recent meeting.

Glassy orbs turned back to said battle, a serious frown flicked my lips into a downward spiral of knowing. They weren’t going to stop until we were either dead or fleeing. Others members of the clan had already entered the fray. I stayed aloft for a little while longer, taking a moment to think about Cera and Ktulu. About our little daughter and earth born son. One deep breath later and my target emerged from their glaze. Her alabaster body a beacon in the endless night. Wings began their half-mast fold, lowering the agent that controlled them. “Return to your home,” I yelled above the noise.
