'I've never seen trees so tall!' She smiled at you then, a smile that spread like wildfire to reflect from the corner of her eyes, a warmth you felt even though your head was tilted back so far that it hurt, sunflower-eyes wide as they reached for the tip-tops of the thick trunks sprawling in every direction, lost to darkness. "They're very, very old, baby, and have had a long time to grow." Your lips curl into that infectious smile that she had given you, too, crinkling your baby's skin with simple laughter. For a moment it was easy to forget (as it was always easy to forget when she looked at you with a smile that you swear rivaled the moon) the anxiety that had been eating at you moments before, that abysmal sense of doom lingering at your fingertips, like a sickly man awaiting death at his bed; it was a solemn hopelessness that flooded and overwhelmed, black and all-consuming.

It was, as she understood it, your way of holding on to your immediate youth, your tangible fear of the dark————a way of coming to terms with growing up and changing into the adult that you never wanted to become in the first place. You had tried to explain it to her, once, and she had laughed a sound of pianissimo and church-bells and held you close, kissing the top of your head. It had seemed then that she did not know what you were trying to say, through the frown that tugged at your rigid lips, eyebrows knit together in careful consideration. Even as you looked to her with the same prying curiosity as always, she seemed as unconcerned as ever. 'Ama?'

Kaleidoscope eyes flutter open to the emptiness of the perpetual night to the sudden sound of hunger, your weight shifting beneath the immense weight of the forest, lungs expelling a tiny breath. It is immediately apparent that you are alone amidst the hum of activity from everywhere around you, low voices that you couldn't understand even if you tried; the feeling of abandonment creeps so slowly through your veins, building a lump within your throat, removing the sting of sleep from your eyes, sending ripples amongst the utter darkness of your skin. 'Ama?' it is hushed, insecure and different as your heart clings to hope, to the thought that she would return, just like she always had before.

She would return, and maybe, maybe this time you would have the words, the courage, to make her understand. Avian bones press closer to the trunk of the tree that you had chosen as your resting place within bedlam, moonlight filtering through the slits in the branches above you, casting shadows. Another rumble emits from your stomach, and again you sigh softly to yourself. She would come back for you, and you would tell her the things you never knew how to say: you were never afraid of growing up, getting old, of the dark or of the uncertainty of another day; you were only afraid of losing her, of waking up to nothing but the ghost of a good thing.

excuse the sad excuse for a post. i suck at these opening things.
the first two paragraphs are more or less irrelevant :3
( in case it's confusing, she's laying at the trunk of a tree just derping )
i would prefer someone from the basin to come and take her little butt home, but this is open to anyone~ <3
