The Earth God had returned.

Snow had begun to lessen its hamhanded fist on the somber world drawn in charcoals and grays, the hard crust yellowed with the stains of piss and half-melted ice giving way to soaked sod. Soon enough after the bitter winter had come grass, a carpet of lush green that sprung up from the earth quick, deep and thick despite the fact the sun had not yet risen. Hips that jutted and ribs that stood as sharp as sticks under a thin tent piece began to fill, covered with a layer of fat that padded bones relatively delicate compared to the weight it carried, muscling out emaciated flanks and strengthening a thin neck. Day and night- or rather, night- the mare painted with a skull's face on her head gorged herself on the rich emerald fodder, until she was reasonably fit and in far better condition than she was just a week ago. Still the darkness dragged on, lagging stubbornly like the lame mule at the back of the pack, and impatience seethed in Confutatis' stomach, a reckless want for the blinding light of the sun to hit her face and splinter into a thousand cracked pieces of her flanks, warming her ever-cold body.

Hunger satisfied, the wolf began to circle, restless, waiting for the red riding hood, driven and determined, starved for a chance, a way to power and glory, to become the ruler of all, to have the horses shake in fear at the sight of her, to whisper her name and have her stray into their nightmares. How long had she spent in this empty, vague world, wandering around, turning light as air as the weight was stripped from her bones, and yet her knees still shivered beneath her, unable to hold her up?

Too long.

So Skullface traveled north, pursuing decaying dreams built on delicate glass ready to crumble at the slightest disturbance. No cobwebs could tarnish her relentless ambition, nothing could turn her away from the path she told herself she was destined to tread. Her father was a King of Demons, and she was the Queen of Skulls, the Lady Death who could not die. Invincible! Immortal! And some might whisper mad, crazed, delusional. But everything in her disembodied mind was crystal clear, so sharp it ached behind her eyes, all the wilted pieces coming smoothly together, to form a vision of death and blood and gore, madness and beautiful power. The cold settled into her bones as she moved, a ghost among the darkness, a necromancer, a bitch and a harlot, with a purpose burned in her mind. Make her father proud. Follow in his legacy, and become better than him, until he was nothing but a shadow compared to her magnificence.

When she reached the border, home to the unicorns, the dark was near pitch, poor conditions to fight in but nonetheless her ambition would not allow a simple matter of too many shadows to stop her. Curls of steam glistened faintly in the claw scratch of the new moon, heat emanating from the pools of mineral water. While the darkness was perpetual, nonetheless it felt more like night than ever with the darkness more close, breathing on the back of her bone-protected neck.

For a moment she lingered in silence, admiring the small world of shelter displayed before her, but she was wary. The narrow path she had traversed that cut into her hooves with rocks and stones was all too easy to block off from the outside- and she had no desire to be trapped within, unless it was of her own choosing. Forwards the demon daughter stepped, hooves crunching loudly through a thick crust of snow that lay on the frozen earth. Did the snowy world ever thaw? No, probably not. That was why the unicorns here were tough little soldiers, used to cold weather always. The footing was poor- an ice crust overtop of hard snow that cut at the lower legs, coming up to her knees, and lashing at her fetlocks with every step. Up at the top of the hill she was, so anyone coming to meet her and challenge her for trespass would have to climb up to her.

Silently the bare-headed mare stood, watching and waiting for the one to come and greet her, hindquarters to an extremely steep slope of scree with a few boulders higher up the slope balanced treacherously, prepared to topple down at any moment. The thin entrance, the pass to the valley, was to her right side.

Someone would come, she was sure of it.

With patience, all good things would come- she only hoped the one to greet her would throw itself into battle immediately. It would be good to get the blood moving.

Confutatis is challenging for entry into the Aurora Basin! In specific, Illynx. I wasn't sure if this challenge had to be directed to one person or not (?) Following normal challenge rules (4 posts, 1 closing defense, no magic restrictions except for two uses) and hybridized dice system.

Challenge issued during the new moon, so extremely dark. Snow icy, not great footing. Confutatis' back to steep rocky slope.
