What now? The mare stood, awkward, in the heart of the Foothills. A soft breeze caressed her skin, cascading through the tumble of hair and throwing it wildly like crashing waves against the shore, tangling it like webs among tree branches. Her raven eyes threw a glare upwards toward her antlers, groaning as she felt a familiar tug against her crest. Long mane and branch like horns did not go hand in hand, the unicorn would tell you as she shook her heavy head in a feeble attempt to shift the tendrils from their irritating grasp. No luck; she groaned again loudly in frustration and gave another, more violent, shake of her head. A few of the weaker tangles slipped from their perch but many remained.

Dizzy from throwing her head around, the mare sighed and tried to forget about the irritating birds nest that seemed to be forming atop her head. Long legged strides carried her forward as she explored the terrain, cloven feet dancing among rocks and stones with ease. The land reminded her much of home which was a double edged sword - she felt at ease immediately upon entering the lands, yet it served as a heavy reminder that she was far from her family. She would turn, forgetting and hoping that she might glimpse lazy Terra bathing herself in sunlight like some fort of plant, or wildfire Fjord pissing off a stallion, yet those souls were not here. They were lost to memory, and should stay there.

It was not only family that bothered her, though. The face of Alleo, the silver knight, kept flicking back to the forefront of her mind like a plague, pestering her. It infuriated her. Why would he not leave her be? She told herself it was sheer dislike that made his face pop into her head. It had absolutely nothing to do with anything else. Nothing. NOTHING.

She hated him. He had no right to judge her as he had done.

She made her way toward the waterfalls, stopping by the edge of the water. Peering down, she eyed her reflection to examine just how ridiculous she looked. The verdict? Very. Grumbling, the long legged creature slipped gracefully into the waters, moving slowly toward the waterfall. The main portion was strong and heavy, yet smaller streams of water also tipped over the rocky edge above which would not be quite so violent to stand beneath. She hoped the pouring waters might shift the hair from her antlers after the wind so rudely mocked her.

Testing the waters with the tip of her muzzle, she deemed it fine to wash beneath. Taking a deep breath, she mare slipped her head under the falls, allowing the cold stream to wash over her horns and face. Shifting her body to the side, the waters tumbled over her body, washing away any dirt or impurities from her scarlet tinted pelt. It was refreshingly cool in the warm spring air. She closed her eyes, relaxing as she listened to the early morning birdsong, allowing the waters to wash away her doubts and cleanse her thoughts. There would be no more stupid thoughts, she told herself.

That adamant thought was futile. The moment her eyes closed, his face was there again. He was infuriatingly handsome. Yet in her mind, anything could happen. anything.

"I was wrong about you Cheyenne, I am so sorry for those things that I said. I beg you, forgive me, sweet thing?" His words pleaded, stunned by her regal beauty. He threw himself at her feet, ashamed that he mocked her so. He was wrong in assuming anything about the creature before him. All wrong. She was glorious, amazing, everything he ever wanted. She smiled down upon him, pelt glowing with the light of a thousand fireflies, flowers draped over her antlers as her mane tumbled around her face. "You are forgiven, sir knight..."

She was lost in her own stupid imagination.

"Talk."

Ever since the sun had rose Alleo had been relishing in the warmth it provided, allowing it to seep into the very marrow of his bones. He, along with so many others, had spent so long in absolute darkness that it almost felt surreal that the ball of fire was overhead once more. A gentle breeze ruffled his dark mane, the strands fluttering against his shoulder making the muscles twitch in response. He sighed, opening his eyes and surveying the fields of green that seemed to be coming back to life before his very eyes. It was quiet and he wasn't sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing. Growing up he'd always been told about the 'calm before the storm'. It was calm. It was quiet. He could almost see the darkening clouds on the horizon and yet no one seemed to be at all concerned, but then again he didn't go out of his way to speak to anyone in the herd and no one went out of their way to speak to him.

The grey and white stallion yawned and stepped forward, frowning at the way his joints cracked and popped because he had been standing still for so long. Before long, though, he steps were silent aside from the rustling of the grass as his hooves parted it. Tail flicked and ears rotated atop his head as he listened for anyone else that might be around, but the Foothills was ever silent save for the occasional songbird that would sing to him. He zigzagged his way through the fields, going from dandelion to dandelion, kicking the white puffs and watching the seeds float and settle before moving on to the next one.

Alleo grew bored soon and altered his course so he would be headed toward the waterfall for he had not had a bath in sometime. In the darkness he would not venture even into the shallows not only because of the chill that had lingered in the air, but because he could not see what lurked in the water. As he neared the waterfall and the pool he could see just how clear the water was. He only lingered on the edge of it for a few seconds before stepping into the water and sighing. It was cool but not cool enough to make him high tail it away, tail between his legs like a beaten dog.

Another sound made him turn and he found that he was not the only one there and not the only one with the mindset of having a bath. Cheyenne was there, but she would be easy for Alleo to ignore. His gaze drifted away from her and he stamped a hoof into the water, splashing some of it up onto his chest and belly. He stepped deeper into the water all the while keeping one ear tilted toward Cheyenne while he washed the dirt from his coat so the white would gleam in the sunlight like it should.

Her head lowered toward his as he grovelled before her, her lips brushing the tumble of hair from over his eyes. She smiled, chuckling slightly. "Stand, sir knight," she whispered as he glanced up toward her. Slowly her rose, his gaze averted and sheepish. "You are too kind, milady, I-"

She had been standing under the cooling stream of water for some length of time before she was disturbed. When she was, she found herself growing quickly annoyed that her daydream was cut short. Her eyes fluttered open, torn from her fantasy by the sound of quiet splashing. Gentle ripples spread out across the lake, disrupting the water. The noise, she quickly discovered, was due to another horse wading into the waters, and as she squinted - eyes burning with the light after having them closed for some time - she realized who it was.

A sudden flush swooped up into her cheeks and she suddenly felt very warm and flustered despite the chilly waters that rained down upon her. She quickly turned away, only to shove her nose into the water. Snorting, taken aback as water flooded her nares, she stumbled away from the waterfall and stumbled. Her hoof had caught a rock as she carelessly shied to the side and, though she tried hard to find her footing, she fell.

Suddenly submerged, the mare found the bottom of the lake and pushed herself up, bursting from the surface with a gasp as water poured from her sodden fur. Parting her lips to suck in breath, she tried to snort out the water clogged in her noise as she steadied herself. The flush that had heated her cheeks suddenly felt like it was burning her entire body - she was surprised the water didn't heat up a few degrees. Panting, she sheepishly glanced to the side to see if he had noticed. No doubt he had. He was probably finding it very amusing, watching her flail around like a mere child - or worse, like a fish. She glanced down at her reflection, shamed and embarrassed, - she had to so something to collect herself.

Judging from her reflection, though, the hair was untangled from her antlers. Silver lining and all that jazz.

She cleared her throat, getting her breath back as she leaned down to sip the water quietly. She had no way of really improving the situation beside act casual. Just pretend it never happened and everything would be fine.

Probably.

...Not.

It was his fault though. He had taken her off guard. Prick.

Alleo paid very little mind to Cheyenne because she was just as easy to ignore as he'd figured she would be. That was, at least, until she snorted and started splashing around in the water like she was drowning. He turned just in time to see her disappear under the water. The only movement he made was the tilting forward of his ears as he watched the area she'd disappeared under the water. Was she playing games? He remembered playing games in the water when he and his sisters were younger. Before he developed a hatred and near fear of the stuff.

When Cheyenne's head finally appeared again he couldn't help but chuckle. He wondered if she knew just how foolish she looked then decided that she did with the way she was slinking out of the water like a beaten dog. The stallion looked away and splashed more water up onto his chest and neck. "The princess bested by a waterfall." He called out to her, clearly amused. "Not something one has the pleasure of witnessing everyday." Maybe he was being a little too hard on Cheyenne, though. Maybe their first meeting hadn't been too good, but she certainly hadn't done anything to him this time around.

He cleared his throat and took a few steps toward her, then. "Are you okay?" Being ever curious he wondered what she had been daydreaming about that had turned her into a klutz.

She edged toward the dry earth slowly, a limp in her step from twisting her amkle on the rock and raising her head in a fruitless attempt to gain some semblance of dignity. Her attempts proved futile as she tried to sneak off, only to be openly mocked from behind. Her head lowered and her ears twitched backwards in his direction, glancing to the side to send a glare in his direction. It was needless of him to laugh at her when she was trying to slip away. What sort of man was he? "Bested by a rock and badly placed footing, more like, sir knight, and it is not every day I am mocked when I deserved no such thing." She didn't even try to best him, simply stated a fact and turned her head away once more, slipping through the shallows as water lapped hungrily at her feet.

Shamed, with a face that had heated beyond boiling point and an ankle sore from the sudden abuse, Cheyenne turned dejectedly toward the open glade beside the wares edge where the sun might warm and dry her sodden pelt, yet as dark hooves hit grass, she realized he had turned to follow her. Her eyes rolled in her skull. Was he here to ridicule her more? To torment her when all she had wanted was some time alone with her, ahem, interesting thoughts?

Why did he plague her so? Wy did he insist in doing this to her, to infiltrate her mind and refuse to see any good within her? He had made his depictions about her, and he was as his rocky pelt implied - strong, impenetrable, and hard as stone. Changing his attitude on her would be impossible, she knew.

So why, then, did he ask her if she was okay?

The words shocked her slightly and brought back her day dream. She flushed, refusing to turn to face him. Why bother giving him that much? Her tail flicked as the irate mare shook her mane, only to glare with equal parts angrily and dismally as the wet tendrils caught her antlers once again. She was tempted to offer sarcasm, but she really was not in the mood for a fight. Not at that moment in time anyway. "Just dandy, thank you. Go back to your bath." She responded, face downcast as she threw herself to the ground a tad too dramatically and rested her face upon the grass. She winced slightly as she did, her ankle painting her slightly.

"Talk."

Maybe he shouldn't have mocked her as openly as he had because she had done nothing to deserve it at that point in time, but he couldn't help but think about and remember her attitude when he'd found her in the Threshold. He had not taken kindly to her 'holier than thou' attitude and the stuck up way she had carried herself. Perhaps there had been a reason for her to act the way she had at that point and he'd given her no reason to even attempt to change her attitude to a more civil one. He was just as much at fault as she had been, he finally decided.

As she pointed out that she did not deserve the mockery he simply sighed, but said nothing to imply whether or not she was right. Muscled shoulders rose something akin to a shrug as she brushed him off and told him to go back to his bath. He did and began to move toward the waterfall, taking a breath when he was close enough and holding it as he disappeared under the cascade of water. Alleo was not under the falls for long before reappearing and making for the shoreline. He had spent more than enough time in it and was growing eager to shake the excess water from his now clean pelt and allow the sun to dry him.

Water splashed rather loudly as Alleo walked to the shore and when he was standing on solid ground he shook out his mane, sending droplets of water flying in every direction and the dark strands of his mane in disarray. His head dropped and he rubbed his face on a foreleg before looking toward the princess, as he called her. "If your ankle truly ails you then you should see the Earth Medic." He said, though he was not sure how Lakota would take to Cheyenne. Chances were his sister would try to harm the cheeky mare.

She closed her eyes, feeling the warmth of the sun beat down upon her body, slowly evaporating the moisture from her pelt. She let her mind wander, though this time she was nothing making up mindless fantasies that in no way mimicked reality. No, this time she saw the faces of her sisters and her newborn brother, the one who finally pushed her to leave. Maybe she had been wrong in storming off like a sulking child, beating her fists upon the floor for attention like a spoiled brat, yet she had seen no future for herself there. She no no orphan, she had no traumatic past which lead her here, only selfish intentions and plans that had been thwarted by the birth of a single, male, child,

She sighed, rolling into her side and stretching out her limbs, though it was difficult to get comfortable with her prongs raising her head from the ground. Her eyes opened, glancing toward the falls where the stallion had gone, following her statement evidently, from her horizontal view of the world, she watched him enter the falls for a short while, water cascading down silver shoulders, stroking his velvet body with the embrace of a cold lover - harsh, yet comforting. Frigid, yet warm. Eyes half lidded, she found herself watching him for just a moment too long as he turned to exit the lake.

Pushing herself up to sit upright, she turned away as he moved toward her. Why did she watch him so avidly? Why was his dull, listless pelt so alluring? She told herself is was probably a mild concussion from her fall, thin she knew she had suffered no such damage. There had to be some reason he haunted her.

He spoke again and she glanced sideways toward him as he shook out his mess of ebony hair. "It's just a slight sprain, I twisted it when it got stuck. Nothing that won't heal on it's own. I don't need any bodies help.." She told him, voice slightly bitter. She had no reason to hide herself from him. It was a mutual dislike, and if he was going to mock her, she would not bother faking niceties. "Sit, won't you?." She requested with a gigh. His large size was intimidating when he stood close by, her body small and slender, and especially so when ,saying in the grass. "The grass is warm. It is a good day to just...sit." She smiled at her own words, reminded terribly of Terra. She had any excuse to sit around. So often was she seen in a single spot that Cheyenne had thought she had taken root and was drinking in sunlight like a plant. Terra and Djana would tell her to get to know the stallion, to at least get on so that they could avoid this awkwardness everytime they bumped into one another. She decided she would try, but she couldn't guarantee she wouldn't piss him off.

It would probably be intentional. She was already annoyed by his ridicule.

"Bitterness is unattractive." Alleo said rather bluntly in response to Cheyenne's tone. He stared down at her a moment longer before he began to walk away, uninterested in spending even a moment longer with such a stuck up, bitter, spoiled little mare. She would take it as an insult rather than a statement, he knew, and she would likely spit more venom at him and he would just let it roll off his back. It wasn't like he had to spend every waking minute with her, anyways. This was the first time he'd seen her since he'd brought her from the Threshold to the Foothills. Honestly he could have waited a little longer before seeing her again, but fate had other plans, obviously.

The warrior was stopped in his tracks when she asked him to sit. He turned and looked at her, staring as it another head had sprouted from her shoulders. There was obviously something she wanted if she was asking him to sit with her. He looked down at the grass when she mentioned that it was warm and that it was a nice day to just sit. Alleo had to admit that she was right, but did he want to lay in the grass by her and listen to more of her whiny insults?

Ultimately Alleo decided to give Cheyenne a chance to redeem herself, though he wasn't going to tell her that was why he decided to stay, and laid down in the grass several feet from her. His bicolored eyes stayed on her for several seconds before his head turned and he scanned the area behind them. It was nice to finally lay down, he had to admit. The whole time darkness had reigned he had slept on his feet, refusing to be completely vulnerable in such darkness, but now the sun was up and Cheyenne was right. The grass was warm.

Bitterness is unattractive She scowled, turning her head away from him, almost wishing him to leave despite her invitation. She tried to be civil, hell she tried to be somewhat nice, in her bias opinion, yet here he was being a jerk. A huge stupid jerkface. He was no knight. He was a fraud; a pawn. A queen had no need for pawns, nor should she waste her time bothering with him.

He sat, though she sensed reluctance in him, as he sat a fair distance from her. She did not mind. In fact, it suited her just fine. She didn't need him to like her, just to accept her. Though she hated the stallion, something in her gut did not allow her to leave so soon. Something pulled at her gut and yearned for him to simply smile at her, or to not retort with sarcasm or bitterness. Maybe she was simply so used to being liked that when she finally came across a soul who did not take kindly to her, it played on her mind. Maybe she actually liked the guy and that was why it bothered her. Either way, she sat like a sulking child, bottom lip stuck out and head turned away, ears occasionally flicking in his direction as if expecting him to talk to her.

It was hard to enjoy the warmth of the sun beating down upon her chocolate-cinnamon pelt when the mood between the two was so awkward and fragile. The silence lingered heavily around the pair, diminishing the beauty of the day. Her pelt began to dry quickly and the last few tendrils of sodden hair fell from their perch, flopping down over golden eyes. She sat for what felt like a long while, each second feeling minutes long as she repeatedly opened her mouth to speak, changed her mind, and stared blankly at a few strands of grass.

At last, she sighed. There were no words to convince him, and no words she wanted to share with him. She was a worthless princess, to him, and he was an arrogant arsehole to her. Why did they bother trying to be civil? Why bother sitting here and hoping to mend the nonexistent friendship? They had never been anything but two souls who shared a mutual dislike for the other, and they would never be anything more than that. Quietly, she got to her feet, glancing behind her for a moment, yet she said nothing as she turned and walked away.

She had made the decision to give up and leave. So why the hell did it bother her so damned much?

"Talk."

A lazy yawn escaped the mares lips as she trundled through the trees that dotted the landscape. She had taken the day to relax, instead of constantly circling the parameter like a vulture. It had become tiresome, and now that she was a general she hoped the duty would be divided more equally. The other warriors had become lazy, it seemed, for in her time within the heart she had yet to witness any spars and very few bothered to guard the borders despite their vulnerability. That would change, she vowed, but not today. Today she was having a well earned day off.

As she moved, she heard stomping hooves. Her ears flickered curiously as she looked up, spotting a rather pissed off and almost melancholy mare before her. Her antlers were dipped and she let semi-wet hair flop into her eyes, shielding her face as she moved swiftly from the waterfall. "'Lo there, are you well Lady?" Asked Artemis, voice quiet an polite as always, yet she got no answer. The mare blanked her, seemingly lost in thought as she passed by. Her shoulder brushed Artemis' but the unicorn did not say a word, instead glancing over her shoulder to watch the striped mare leave.

What had that been all about? Artemis shook her head with a soft sigh, shrugging her mammoth shoulders as she turned back toward the falls, plodding on her way and not letting the ignorant mare bother her. Any thoughts of Cheyenne were quickly forgotten in the time it took for her to reach the large clearing where she paused and took in a deep breath. The waterfall plummeted wildly, the sound of it both relaxing and unnerving to the hydrophobic creature. As he teal-grey eyes quickly scanned the grass, she spotted a grey pelt laying in the grass. She wandered over. "May I sit with you?" She asked, pausing a moment before gently lowering her body to the ground. The grass was warm and smelt like sweet dew. She inhaled, enjoying the fresh scent. For a moment she allowed the quiet to wash over her, relaxing her muscles as she flopped to her side with her legs sprawled haphazardly. Who cares if she looked strange? It was her day off.. "I apologize, but I don't recall your name. I am Artemis." She greeted, opening one eye to peer up at his face. "Is something bothering you?"

Alleo was waiting for Cheyenne to spit venom back at him for his comment about her bitterness, but much to his surprise the mare remained silent. He did glance at her and even though he couldn't see her face because she was looking away from him he could imagine the look on her face. She had to be scowling and glaring angrily at something because that was all he knew her to be. An angry, spoiled brat that was full of herself. He knew he had not put up the best first impression himself, but she had started it. The corners of his mouth pulled down into a frown and he turned his head away from her and stared off into the distance.

Though it looked like he wasn't paying any attention to the mare, he was. He listened to every breath she took, every swish of her tail, the rustle of the grass whenever she shifted. When she stood he turned his head enough so he could watch her, wondering if she would try something stupid like she did when she'd put her horns to close to his face, but she walked away. His head turned more and he watched her as she glanced back as she departed.

The stallion turned his head away from her once more, but he wasn't alone for long before another mare came. He looked to her and dipped his head in acknowledgement of both her presence and her question of sitting with him. He didn't know how much longer her was going to be, honestly, but he did need to at least learn the names of some of the other Foothills residents he supposed. Alleo cleared his throat when she introduced herself. "I am Alleo." He said in response. "And no." He glanced at Cheyenne's retreating form before looking back to Artemis. "Nothing is bothering me."
