Kahlua stood in a secluded portion of the woods near the cliffs, nosing the plum colored amulet that hung around her neck and feeling rather lonely despite the commotion about her. Her herd mates were many and active, but the two she seemed to desire most were nowhere to be found. She had been searching for Lace and Aaron without success for days, putting aside even her want and desires in search of the stallions. With the return of the glorious sun, she had felt the land come alive with magic. When she had first come here she had not understood what Thor had meant about the lack of magic, but now that it was back she knew. She could feel it in her bones. Therefore, she had been seeking her superiors in an effort to continue work on the wall that was already somewhat encircling the borders of her beloved Edge.

With no luck in finding them, Kahlua had decided to return to the little hideaway she considered her own, in the Edge. It was nothing special, a simple copse of trees that had twisting and entwining roots. Between the roots, Kahlua had dug out a small burrow and within it was an assortment of various-colored gems. Though magic had been gone from the land, Kahlua had not been idle. Much of her time had been spent socializing and learning the lay of the land, but she had also been hard at work. She did not know what the gems were useful for yet, as Lace had not told her of any plans besides the wall, but someday she would prove her worth. Perhaps then, she would be able to use them for her own projects.

Mirage the DragonHeart

It had all happened so fast. The murders, the war, the challenges from her own friends, the treaty that had been agreed upon, albeit temporary. The DragonHeart suddenly found herself without a single Glazier, for Aaron had found himself with the added responsibility of being a father as well as a brother to all of his sisters, and Lace.. Well, he had declared his hatred for her clear as anything else. She wondered whether she had lost him permanently, whether he would make himself scarce from her forevermore.. No. She would not allow that to be. She would seek him out in the near future, she would face him and hear his final judgement of her once the wounds of everything he went through have healed over. As the mare wandered across the borders of her home, with her magical cloak spread across her dark bodice, she wondered what to do regarding the unfinished wall.

The Edge held some acolytes and apprentices, and she tried to recall each of them in turn. Many were still youngsters, yearlings or younger still, and certainly not capable of holding the rank and the responsibility that went along with it. In her wanderings, Akaith helped her, borrowing images she had seen in her communications with fellow companions. It was as the mare came across Kahlua that she reflected upon the hazy, rough image of a paint damsel in her mind, connecting the name with some passing comments from Lace of an apprentice who was not only willing to learn, but capable of doing so swiftly and with enthusiasm. The DragonHeart dropped her illusionary cloak, standing before the mare who was inspecting the wall, a curious smile upon her maw as Akaith flitted in the trees above them.

"Kahlua?" Her silky smooth voice asked, the troubled thoughts that would normally plague her shoved aside as she hoped to address this very issue of an unfinished wall as soon as was possible. "I am Mirage." Warm tones added as she offered an inclination of her tiara, awaiting the mare's response, and perhaps a confirmation that this young girl would be willing to take up the place that had been forfeited recently.

The sudden appearance of a black mare before her caused Kahlua to start and take a step back suddenly, ears perking towards the being that had solidified before her almost out of nothing. For a moment she was frightened, stiffened still and beginning to nicker a grumbling uncertainty. A moment's consideration, however, and the fact that the mare knew her name, gave Kahlua some peace. Taking the time to really look over who was before her, then, Kahlua was rewarded with more words. I am Mirage. Her eyes widened out of reflex awe and happiness. She had been certain that she was too lowly for the DragonHeart to ever address her directly- a mere peon compared to the giants that walked this forest. She was slowly working towards becoming one of those giants, of course, but that took time.

Without hesitation, the mare bowed to the queen, extending a limb forward and lowering her head and neck. The motion was not entirely well-practiced, the mare having not found anyone worthy of bowing to besides Thor since her arrival here. Still, she managed to hold the pose long enough for her liking. Looking at herself as she rose, Kahlua was almost ashamed. The pure and intense heat of the summer had left salt marks upon her hide that she had not yet managed to clean from herself, and dampness was obvious in small, broken areas of her body. “My queen,” she said finally, looking up to the ebony lady with eager eyes, hoping the mare would take no notice of her seemingly shabby appearance. “How can I serve you?”

Confused by the very presence of the dragon queen, she could only hope and assume that her assistance was needed in some task. Even a small, menial task would be enough... Anything she could do to prove her worth and use to the queen, and therefore elevate her standing in the lady's eyes, would be a win as far as Kahlua was concerned.

Mirage the DragonHeart

The belle was young, at least, she appeared young to Mirage's weathered gaze. The DragonHeart had seen a great many years, and learned a great many things, and now she was leading and teaching others - after a life spent alone, there was no denying that she was usually a selfish soul, wanting only to preserve her own life. Upon entering Helovia, she had found herself surrounded by those she had begun caring for, and suddenly, they began to follow her.. The mare pressed the memory of her first friend in this land aside, refusing to brood on it. All that had happened did not change what needed to happen from now on. She needed to ensure her herd's safety, to guarantee it, to be able to create a wall that would make any creature hesitate and fail.

She needed a Glazier.

"You have already served me well," the DragonHeart began, a small smile upon her lips. The young paint's name was known to most everyone in the herd, aside from herself - and who was to blame there? The shadowmare loved her herd, every one of them she would die for, and yet, there were those who shared her borders with her, who called her their leader, that she had not even laid eyes upon. "I know you are still in training, but I must ask something great of you. Our Glaziers have recently found themselves unable to hold their titles." Aaron had found the pressures of family life too hard, and Mirage understandably allowed him to step down, hoping that he would willingly take up the mantle once more when he was able. Lace had.. left. And she did not know if he was ever going to return.

"Kahlua, would you rise to the station of Glazier, and embrace the magic our fair Lady Moon would bestow upon you for it, to help me build a wall to ensure the safety of our home for generations to come?"

You have already served me well, the Dragon Heart claimed and Kahlua could not help but cock her head. She could not think of a single thing she had done to aid the queen but her standards were also different. She desperately wanted to prove her worth to anyone that would help her further her own cause. She was lucky, then, that Mirage was a kindly and vigilant leader who had different ideas about what was useful and what was not. Better yet, she was lucky she had not yet done something so stupid that Mirage had caught wind.

I must ask something great of you, she continued and Kahlua cocked her head in curiosity. She still did not understand, could not understand. But she did not have to stop and ponder. For all her mysteriousness, Mirage did not skirt around this issue. Would you rise to the station of Glazier? If it was possible, the girl would have radiated like the sun itself. Her smile took up her entire face, her ears perked straight up and her head lifted high. Was this reality, or was it a dream? She had imagined this so many times, worked for it and strove for recognition. Had she finally achieved it.

“My queen,” she repeated in a soft murmur, her brain almost in a stupor that she should have been asked. “Could I say no? Of course I will become your Glazier!” In that moment, she thought nothing. Her mind was blank, her surprise and joy filtering out anything else she might have thought. She would have bounced about like a fool, except she was rooted into place by her stupor. “Thank you!” Finally, she had achieved her goal. Perhaps coming to this place, despite all of its hidden secrets and terrors, had been the right choice. Perhaps she was meant for Helovia after all.
