The sound of his name being called across the open ground sent a jolt of adrenaline through Roland’s system, head jerking around in surprise to find the origin of the sound. It was rare that he came across others on the flat steppe, and rarer still that a wanderer might know him by name. Lost in thoughts that were none too peaceful, he was convinced that a new arrival could only mean trouble. He turned, drawing away from the edge of the cliff with wary steps as his eyes swept over the empty horizon. A flash of silver caught his eye, and he turned the other way with an embarrassed start.

The face was, thankfully, familiar and unthreatening; or so he suspected. Roland knew the pallid mare standing before him had a wit as sharp as his own, and possessed less sentiment than himself. She certainly had not gained his trust in the short time they’d spent together, but he wasn’t particularly unhappy to see her. “Seiren,” he breathed, voice almost drowned out by the hiss of the sea. He stepped towards her, hesitant, and offered a warm smile. “It’s been a while, hasn’t it?

The thought occurred to him that perhaps it would be wise to remain on his toes with her around. He might not have had harmful intentions, but he wouldn’t be able to say the same for her. The last time they had talked he'd felt like the woman had held out one hand in friendly greeting while keeping the other tucked behind her back, brandishing a knife. Yet the warmth radiating through the air from the rising sun had sapped the tension from his muscles and soothed any irritations in his mind. He was sated and content, liquid gold against the stormy background of the distant sea below, and she seemed to have caught him in a good mood.

"It's good to see you," he added finally, tail curling around his hocks in a way that clearly exhibited his unease at being crept upon. It wasn't exactly a lie. Even if the Impersonator was wary of the sharp tongued mare, he held nothing against her for being the way she was. Roland tilted his head to the side speculatively, the watery dawn light glancing off his horn as he moved. It was a decent enough warning, even if he had no intentions of fighting with her. But his blade was drawn if the occasion called for it.

(Thanks for being patient dear! I'm still getting back into the swing of things. <3)

Push your luck if it makes you a promise
that turns con men honest.
