Roland stood in silence as she approached, unmoving against the roiling backdrop of waves and wind-twisted clouds, a simple bronze thumb print over a canvas of navy blue. The sun was rising in the distance, climbing over the curve of the ocean and bleeding yellow into the lightening dawn. Shadows were cast over his cheeks and wound through his ruddy mane, but his coat held a sleek, metallic shine to it. His smile was warm and welcoming as Seiren halted before him with a remark of agreement that broke the easy silence between them.

The stallion’s eyes wandered over her silver coat, which had taken on a peculiar tint in the sunlight whereas last time they had met it had been the moon bathing them in a soft, pallid glow. He, fortunately, found her black eyes not quite so chilling when they reflected an early rising dawn. If he wasn’t mistaken, there was a hint of enthusiasm in their murky depths, and he wondered if perhaps she was truly as pleased to see him as she said, reciprocating his statement with a smile of her own.

Well, I suppose a lot has changed since I saw you last, hasn’t it? Now we have the sun and the Gods to watch over us once again,” his tone was well disguised of its reverence, eyes roaming over Seiren’s face for any hint of an unfavorable reaction. He had known of others who didn’t hold the Gods in such high regard as he. On second thought, perhaps he should have left it out of the conversation altogether. Truthfully, he himself was beginning to question his devotion to them. All his life he had stumbled about from one disaster to another and no amount of prayer had done him any good. His gaze fell to the ground, searching. He didn’t know what to believe anymore.

I met an old friend I haven’t seen in years,” he added, to break the stiff silence, and if he left out the part that his brother in arms happened to be a Pegasus, well, no one had to know. “We fought a war together some time ago. It was nothing special.” He smiled fondly as he glanced up at the silver mare. “And you?” He enquired with a tilt of his head. Something tugged at the edge of his mind then, a memory that was more fresh than stagnant. Illynx had told him to seek out others and learn information from them; to gather news of the world beyond the icy halls of the Aurora Basin. “What does a girl get up to when she doesn’t have a herd to go home to?” It was easy to ask the question and make it harmless, curious. She had, after all, asked the same of him beforehand. The information could be lured from her without her having ever suspected a thing.

But the question had barely left his lips before guilt began to settle heavily in his chest. Maybe he wouldn’t say anything to the Basin’s Lady after all. They could just talk, companionably, and he could try to make a friend for once. The habit of manipulating was deeply seated in his psyche, encouraging him to play the role of a shark with every solid breath, but he repressed it with an imperceptible sigh.

It’s no good to stand idle on such a lovely morning,” he stated, casting out a glance to the bleeding sky. The water reflected the sun’s strong light, shimmering over its rough surface like bits of gold riding the waves. “Why don’t we walk?
