Adira
the Daring

shards beneath our feet

She kept on walking. Her green eyes shifted up, gazing at the blue sky. Birds flew above her and the breeze swiftly brushed against the tree’s leaves, making a rattling noise fill air. Brown harks tipped forward. She listened to the song of natures, closing her eyes to take in the lovely song. Her nostrils flared as she took a deep breath in, and then out. The song stopped, and Adira’s eyes opened.

Thoughts wandered back to where she had started her life. Her old herd, her old family, her old friends. They were dead now. A twang of pain and sorrow filled the mare’s stomach. They were dead all because of the damn infection. She remembered seeing her father get torn, limb-by-limb, apart; the terror in his eyes, and his screaming for freedom being masked by the coughing and hacking sound of the flesh-eaters. It made her wince, yet there was nothing she could do. At that point of time, she did not know how to use her sword that well. She did not know how to aim for the head, but instead of hitting the actual challenger, she would strike the ground. It was far too heavy and her head would bob every time she held it in her maw. But with time she did get used to the weight and with lots of practice, she got better. Now, there was hardly a time when she didn’t strike her opponent.

An unfamiliar voice then got Adira’s attention and sent her thoughts drifting slowly away. Her neck bent down towards her katana. Her maw opened, grabbing the worn leather grip of her weapon. There was something else with her. Silently, she moved forward. Her nostrils widened as she took a breath in to smell the air. Her senses were keen, and just by a small inhale, she could identify what was lurking. Hmm… It smelled like a horse. A Pegasus to be exact. But there was something with her which she could not classify. By the scent, it was a bird but it was a strange, musky trail that led her to believe that this was not any normal creature.

“Hello?” The mare heard someone call out. Adira dropped her katana letting it dangle by her side and she walked over to where she thought the voice was coming from. “Hello!” Her voice was calm and still. It didn’t have a sweet sound, but nor was it rude. Curious perhaps. She then saw her, the one that was calling. She was a grey figure with one wing. Who knows how she had lost her other one, though Adira would not ask. She had something with her. It was that bird thing that she had smelled earlier! He was a very dark one and deffinatly did not look like anything she had ever seen. “Hello there! I… I am Adira. Who are you two?” She said, this time more friendly, offering a gentle smile.
